Randy Vasquez had a brief appearance on Wednesday, but among the Yankees’ starting pitchers in the series against a potent Braves lineup, he performed the most admirably. This was the only bright spot in an otherwise dark night in the Yankees’ history.

In the Yankees’ 2-0 defeat to the Braves, the rookie right-hander showcased his skills, allowing two runs across 3 ¹/₃ innings. This game marked yet another instance where the Yankees’ offense struggled to gain momentum while the pitching department exhibited a better mettle.

Randy Vasquez, with three strikeouts and three walks, reflected on the game as a significant learning opportunity. He noted that going up against a lineup as skilled as the Braves’ was a big step in his ongoing development as a pitcher.

“Definitely a big learning experience,” Randy Vasquez. “Facing a lineup like the one they have, full of talent, it adds on to the career I’m trying to build. Every time I get an opportunity to pitch at this level, it allows me to keep growing as a pitcher.”

Randy Vasquez stood tall as the Yankees faltered

The Yankees contemplated deploying an opener prior to Randy Vasquez’s appearance, a strategy they had utilized against the Marlins on Friday. However, they ultimately entrusted Randy Vasquez to directly confront the Braves.

His initial inning saw Randy Vasquez secure strikeouts against Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson. Nonetheless, in the second inning, he conceded a two-run home run to Eddie Rosario.

During the fourth inning, Randy Vasquez encountered difficulty, allowing consecutive walks with one out. Manager Aaron Boone then made the decision to turn to the bullpen.

Subsequently, Michael King took over and successfully left both runners stranded. Randy Vasquez managed to contain the Braves’ offense more effectively than Clarke Schmidt or Luis Severino, who had started the initial two games of the series.

Boone praised Randy Vasquez for his assertive approach on the mound and noted that he displayed a sense of confidence throughout his pitching performance.

King’s strong outing

Michael King‘s role within the team is currently undefined. He’s versatile, potentially fitting into various positions such as a starting pitcher, a long reliever, or even a crucial figure in high-stakes, late-game situations.

Leading up to Wednesday’s game, there was a consideration that he might take on the role of a starter. But he was chosen as the initial reliever to take the mound.

Presently, the Yankees are maintaining flexibility in their approach to King’s usage, focusing on gradually increasing his pitch count as they explore different possibilities.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the complexities of the situation, especially considering the upcoming off days and the potential inclusion of Carlos Rodon back into the rotation during the next home stand. Following Michael King’s impressive 3 ²/₃ innings of scoreless relief in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the Braves at Truist Park, Boone expressed, “We’re going to evaluate the situation. We’ll continue working on extending his pitch count gradually. However, we also need to be prepared for scenarios where his established role as a successful contributor this season might be required on certain occasions. The approach will remain adaptable in the coming week as we navigate these considerations.”

Taking the mound in the fourth inning to relieve Randy Vasquez, King faced a challenging situation with runners on first and second and one out. Demonstrating his prowess, he successfully navigated the inning and proceeded to deliver three additional innings without conceding any runs, effectively keeping the Yankees competitive in the matchup.

King has embraced the uncertainty surrounding his role without hesitation. While earlier in his career, such ambiguity might have been unsettling, he has since evolved to a point where he refuses to allow it to disrupt his focus. His primary objective is now to maintain a strong performance record, a goal he has consistently achieved in recent outings.

In his past nine appearances, spanning 13 ²/₃ innings, the right-hander has only surrendered two earned runs, significantly lowering his earned run average to an impressive 2.91.

Carlos Rodon update

On Wednesday, Carlos Rodon engaged in a simulated game lasting five innings in Tampa, a step that ensures his progression toward rejoining the Yankees’ starting rotation. Barring any unforeseen setbacks in the interim, Rodon is anticipated to resume his pitching duties on Tuesday against the Nationals at their home ballpark in The Bronx.

Boone expressed positivity about the simulated game, stating that it appeared to proceed smoothly. However, he acknowledged that the upcoming days will determine how well Rodon recovers and progresses.

The decision about which pitcher will be removed from the rotation to accommodate Rodon is still uncertain. However, it is likely that Luis Severino will retain his spot after displaying improvement during Tuesday’s game. Despite conceding five runs, including three earned, and allowing two home runs in a 5-0 defeat, the right-hander demonstrated promising signs of emerging from his challenging phase.
