The former third baseman for the Yankees and the Angels’ versatile infielder, Gio Urshela, is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a fractured pelvis. He suffered an injury when he fell awkwardly at first base while attempting to beat out a grounder during a game on June 15th in Texas.

Phil Nevin, the Angels manager, provided a recent update on this. Gio Urshela, a talented and popular ex-Yankees player, had been performing well following a remarkable transformation this season.

Ex-Yankees 3B man Gio Urshela has a pelvic fracture

As a result of the fall at Globe Life Field, Gio Urshela sustained a fracture in his left pelvis. After consulting with two specialists, it has been determined that surgical intervention is not necessary. However, as Nevin reported, it’s likely that Gio Urshela won’t be able to play any additional games for the remainder of the 2023 season due to the need for rest and recovery.

Playing for the Angels, Gio Urshela has achieved an impressive batting average.299, along with two home runs and 24 runs batted in (RBI). The Angels signed Urshela to a one-year, $8.4 million contract after acquiring him from Minnesota in November. Demonstrating his versatility, Gio Urshela has successfully performed in all four infield positions for the team, with a primary focus on third base and first base.

Gio Urshela was popular among Yankees fans

Gio Urshela gained recognition for his exceptional defensive skills at third base while playing for the Yankees. However, catcher Gary Sanchez joined him in a trade with the Minnesota Twins later on. Josh Donaldson’s batting struggles have discouraged a sizable number of Yankees fans, who have expressed a strong desire to see Gio Urshela rejoin the team.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, it has been noted that the upcoming free agent infield class for the next offseason seems to be lacking in depth. The top player in this group appears to be Matt Chapman, while there are only a few other consistent performers who are heading toward free agency. Jeimer Candelario has been having a satisfactory season in Washington, and Whit Merrifield has been performing reasonably well for the Blue Jays as he enters his age-35 season. Amed Rosario is likely considered the primary choice for the shortstop position, although his current batting line stands at.229/.303/.346 in 65 games played.

The injury suffered by Gio Urshela deals a blow to the Angels’ aspirations of reaching the playoffs and puts an end to their eight-year postseason absence. Compounding their challenges, the Angels are currently without third baseman Anthony Rendon and rookie shortstop Zach Neto, both sidelined due to injuries.

  1. This breaks my heart. Gio is my favorite player even though he no longer plays for the Yankees. Two years ago, I named my foster fail kitten after him. I have MLB extra innings package so I can watch him play. I also saw this injury happen since I was watching that game at the time.
I wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field next year.
    Thinking of you Gio!⚾️🙏

    1. the 3 blind mice in the Yankee org. … Shld Be Fired … Immediately!!!. Brian Cashman , Levine and Arron Boone shld find a job w the little league!!!. If the “Great George Steinbrenner” were to be still alive today … they wld’ve been shit canned by now .
      George wld’ve NEVER put up w this . C’mon Hank….Wake Up !!!. This is an embarrASSment .

      1. I have seen high school teams better ball .Stanton should not be playing Major League Baseball .he is horrible

    2. Loved watching Gio play when he was with the Yankees! Definitely praying for him to have a speedy recovery and be able to return to the game♥️♥️

  2. Yankee’s give so much time to players that show no promise or up side and end up with nothing. The player’s that show there value the Yanks don’t give them the same rope. What a shame, I would take Gio any day over Donaldson. Patience is a virtue and they give it to the wrong one’s.

  3. Of all the Yankees, you would think Jeter would be most likely to have fractured a pelvis.
Best wishes to Geo, heal up and get back out there!

  4. I think your story needs an editor. How can Gio’s injury hurt the Angel’s chances of making the playoffs AND put and end to their 8 year post season drought?

  5. No spark on that team. Volleyball is not ready for majors ,not yet.a ball hit into outfield and billow is almost next to outfielder.he is trying to over achieve

  6. The Yanks sure know how to pick up talent after they played their best years. Stanton never came close to his best yet since he out on the pinstripes. Same for Donaldson. Boone and Cashman need to go

  7. This year’s Yankees team is a disaster. Judge gets a boo boo on his toe and the whole team goes down the crapper.
