The translator for San Diego’s Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish jokes that Domingo German should have another 10 games added to his ban.
Prior to the Yankees’ game against the Padres at Yankee Stadium, Shingo Horie, who was also the translator of Masahiro Tanaka and with the team, playfully mimicked a sticky-stuff check while shaking hands with Domingo German.
According to a video clip from TalkRadio 77 WABC, he examined Domingo German’s left hand for a brief moment before moving to the right hand. He then mimicked the gesture that an umpire would make when ejecting someone.
Following his suspension, which began on May 17 against the Blue Jays and extends until Saturday’s game against the Padres, Domingo German playfully responded by flipping his glove around, as if to humorously indicate that there was no sticky substance present. He then proceeded to embrace Horie in a hug.
Who is Shingo Horie?
Horie, currently serving as the Padres’ coordinator for Japanese player services, previously held the role of translator for Tanaka during the Yankees’ signing of the talented pitcher from Japan. This collaboration occurred when Tanaka secured his lucrative seven-year contract worth $155 million.
After the conclusion of the 2020 season, Tanaka made a decision to rejoin the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, his former team in Nippon Professional Baseball, where he showcased his skills before his tenure with the Yankees. As per his Baseball-Reference.com page, Tanaka has participated in eight games this season, achieving a 2-3 record with a 4.37 ERA.
Horie, who had the opportunity to work alongside Domingo German during the latter’s signing with the Yankees as a free agent in 2015 and subsequent MLB debut in 2017, took the chance to reconnect with his former colleague and playfully tease him ahead of the Yankees-Padres three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Their reunion was filled with lighthearted banter and friendly jokes.
Domingo German’s ‘sticky’ innings
Among the series of unusual events during the recent matchup against the Blue Jays, the incident with the sticky substance involving the Yankees’ 30-year-old starting pitcher added to the list. However, Domingo German’s ejection took place just before the start of the bottom of the fourth inning.
Crew chief James Hoye, who had previously encountered a situation involving German earlier in the season against the Twins where the pitcher was subjected to an increased inspection, remarked that German’s hand was the “most sticky hand” he had ever felt. As a result, the right-hander was subsequently suspended for 10 games and fined. Domingo German chose not to appeal the decision.
Consequently, the Yankees had to navigate through a game without the presence of one of their starting pitchers, and it is anticipated that Domingo German will return to the mound for his first start since the suspension on Monday as they kick off a series against the Mariners.
