On Thursday, MLB announced the list of finalists for the 2022 Gold Glove Awards, which are given to the best fielders of the season. The name of the winner will be unveiled on November 1 before Game 4 of the World Series. The first “Utility” category winner will be chosen in 2022.
There are three finalists from each league for each of the 10 categories. MLB recently added an award for “Utility,” which goes to players who can play more than one position.
The 30 managers and six coaches from each team vote to select the winner of each category. No manager or coach can choose any of their own players though they can vote for a pool of players from their League to choose winners of Gold Glove awards.
These votes constitute 75% of the total votes for selecting winners of Gold Glove awards, with the remaining 25% being accounted for by the SABR’s defensive index (Society for American Baseball Research).
The only exception is the Utility position, which has a specific defensive formula.
Since 1957, Rawlings has given Gold Glove awards to the best players at each position in Major League Baseball.
The Yankees put forward the names of five players for different positions: DJ LeMahieu (utility), Jameson Taillon (pitcher), Anthony Rizzo (first base), Andrew Benintendi (left field), and Jose Trevino (catcher). But they didn’t put forward their power hitter and home-run record holder Aaron Judge.
Manager Aaron Boone thinks that Judge’s time at both spots this season hurt him, even though he didn’t make a mistake in 281 chances. He played 74 games in the middle and 54 games on the right.
“Had he played the whole year right field, he’s probably a finalist in right,” Boone said, “And the same for center, so probably getting split up hurt him a little bit. He’s a great defender. He’s a great right fielder.”
