The New York Yankees have initiated trade discussions with the Arizona Diamondbacks for third baseman Eugenio Suarez, according to insider Jon Heyman marking their first major move to address a critical roster need ahead of the July 31 deadline. It represents a potential solution to the Yankees’ third base crisis following DJ LeMahieu’s surprising release earlier this month.
General Manager Brian Cashman has made clear his aggressive intentions for the deadline, stating the team will “go to town” and “do everything we possibly can to improve ourselves.” With the Yankees currently 54-44 and holding the top American League Wild Card spot, acquiring Suarez would address their most pressing positional need while adding proven power to support MVP candidate Aaron Judge.
Yankees’ third base situation reaches critical point
The Yankees’ third base position became a glaring weakness when they designated DJ LeMahieu for assignment on July 9, ultimately releasing him despite owing $21.6 million through 2026. Manager Aaron Boone explained that LeMahieu “physically, it’s a challenge for him right now,” citing hip issues that prevented him from effectively playing third base.
Currently, the Yankees are starting Oswald Peraza at third base, a “slick-fielding/light-hitting utility infielder” who has posted just a .674 OPS and 37 wRC+ in 2025. The massive production gap makes third base the team’s most obvious upgrade target.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. was moved back to second base permanently after struggling defensively at third, where he committed six errors in recent games due to shoulder issues. This positional shuffle left the Yankees with minimal options at the hot corner.
Suarez emerges as perfect fit

Suarez is enjoying an All-Star caliber 2025 season, batting .250/.320/.569 with 31 home runs and 78 RBI through the break. His .889 OPS ranks him tied for fourth in MLB in both home runs and RBIs, while his 142 wRC+ demonstrates elite offensive production.
The 33-year-old made history on April 26, becoming just the 19th player ever to hit four home runs in a single game. He reached the 300-career home run milestone in June and earned his first All-Star selection this season.
“Yankees are Yankees. It’s a team that wants to win,” Suarez said when asked about potential interest from New York. “If I go there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series.”
His $15 million salary for 2025 makes him an affordable rental option, as he becomes a free agent after the season. The financial commitment aligns with the Yankees’ luxury tax situation, adding approximately $7-8 million to their remaining payroll.
Diamondbacks positioned as deadline sellers
Arizona’s disappointing 47-50 record has positioned them as expected sellers despite initial hopes of competing. Sitting 5.5 games back from the third NL Wild Card spot with just 10.2% playoff odds, rival executives tell USA Today they will “definitely” be sellers.
The Diamondbacks have been “devastated by injuries” to key pitchers, including Corbin Burnes, Jordan Montgomery, and closer Justin Martinez, all requiring Tommy John surgery. This pitching crisis has derailed their season and created urgency to maximize return value for expiring contracts.
GM Mike Hazen acknowledged receiving trade calls, stating, “it’s inevitable when you’re sitting in the standings where we are.” The team has approximately 12 games remaining before the deadline to justify buying rather than selling.
Competitive market intensifies bidding
The Yankees face significant competition for Suarez’s services. The Seattle Mariners have shown strong reunion interest, having employed him from 2022 to 2023. The Detroit Tigers represent his preferred destination, with Suarez stating, “to finish where everything started, it would be cool.”
Other contenders include the Chicago Cubs, who desperately need third base help after posting the worst production at the position in MLB (.533 OPS). The Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Mets have also expressed interest.
This competitive environment works in Arizona’s favor, potentially driving up the prospect cost. The Diamondbacks prefer “MLB-ready or nearly ready prospects” since they hope to contend in 2026 with a healthier roster.
Yankees’ farm system creates challenges

The Yankees’ 27th-ranked farm system, according to multiple scouting services, presents obstacles in trade negotiations. Unlike competing teams, New York lacks the premium prospects Arizona desires for impact players.
Potential trade packages could include pitcher Cam Schlittler, who has shown MLB promise, or outfielder Spencer Jones from their thin prospect pool. Arizona’s preference for young pitching aligns poorly with the Yankees’ depleted organizational depth.
Industry experts rate the trade likelihood at 40-50%, with the Yankees’ weak farm system being the primary obstacle. They may need to overpay or include MLB-ready pitching they need for their injury-ravaged rotation.
Championship window drives urgency
The Yankees’ World Series aspirations create urgency to address roster deficiencies. Despite recent struggles, including two six-game losing streaks and being swept by Toronto, manager Aaron Boone maintains championship expectations.
“We set out in Spring Training and the start of the year to get back to the playoffs and go chase after a world title,” Boone said. “All those hopes and dreams are right there and still exist for us.”
Aaron Judge’s historic pace provides a foundation for success. The likely MVP candidate leads MLB with a .355 batting average, 35 home runs, and 1.194 OPS through the break. Adding Suarez would provide protection in the lineup while addressing their most glaring weakness.
Cashman emphasized the aggressive approach: “I’d certainly love to import a starter, some relievers, and an infielder as well, if possible. That’s a long list…but we will try to be active.”
With 11 days remaining until the deadline, the Yankees’ pursuit of Suarez represents their first major move in what could be a franchise-defining trade period.
