The latest list of top 100 prospects released by MLB Pipeline includes only three Yankees prospects. A few days ago, Baseball America put out its list of the top 100 prospects for the 2023 season and five Yankees players made to the list. Shortstop Anthony Volpe is the top Yankees prospect on both lists.
Anthony Volpe: No. 1 of Yankees Prospects
Position: Shortstop
Age: 21
MLB Pipeline: No. 5
Baseball America: No. 14
2022 clubs: Somerset Patriots (AA), Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA).
2022 hitting: .249 average, 511 AB, 86 runs, 127 hits, 35 doubles, 5 triple, 21 HR, 65 RBI, 65 BB, 118 K, 50 SB, 7 CS, .802 OPS, 132 games.
2022 fielding: 13 errors, .971% in 127 games (127 starts) at shortstop.
Volpe has been able to maintain his ranking on MLB Pipeline’s updated rankings. However, he was down four places on BA’s list though he remains the No. 1 of Yankees prospects.
Yankees fans might be most excited to see Volpe and Peraza play in the major leagues. Peraza played 18 games for the Yankees last season because of injuries in the infield. Last season, Volpe split his time between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He is the best among Yankees prospects, and he could play in the major leagues as early as 2023.
Oswald Pereza
Position: Shortstop
Age: 22
MLB Pipeline: No. 52
Baseball America: No. 55
2022 clubs: Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA), New York Yankees.
2022 hitting: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, .259 average, 465 AB, 57 runs, 100 hits, 16 doubles, 16 HR, 50 RBI, 34 BB, 100 K, 33 SB, 5 CS, .777 OPS, 115 games. Yankees, .396 average, 49 AB, 8 runs, 15 hits, 3 doubles 1 HR, 2 RBI, 6 BB, 9 K, 2 SB, 0 CS, .833 OPS, 18 games.
2022 fielding: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 9 errors, .971% in 89 games (89 starts) at shortstop; 2 errors, .941% in 10 games (10 starts) at second base. Yankees, 0 errors in 12 games (11 starts) at shortstop; 0 errors in 4 games (3 starts at second base).
Pereira is an outfielder who can do everything and has moved up to Double-A. The 21-year-old was a top international prospect in the 2017 class. In 29 games for Somerset last year, he hit .283/.341/.504 with five home runs and 13 RBI.
The Yankees didn’t sign any of the big-name free-agent shortstops like Trea Turner or Xander Bogaerts, but the team has said that it’s excited about Volpe and Peraza, who is already on the team.
Jasson Dominguez
Position: Outfielder
Age: 19
MLB Pipeline: No. 47
Baseball America: No. 67
2022 clubs: Tampa Tarpons (Low A), Hudson Valley Renegades (High A), Somerset Patriots (A).
2022 hitting: .267 average, 451 AB, 92 runs, 123 hits, 23 doubles, 7 triples, 16 HR, 59 RBI, 72 BB, 128 K, 37 SB, 7 CS, .836 OPS, 120 games.
2022 fielding: 7 errors, .969% in 102 games (102 starts) in center field.
Dominguez is only 19, but he might have the highest potential of any Yankees prospect. Dominguez has the potential to be a five-tool center fielder who plays every day. He’s probably still at least a year away from the majors, but he’s steadily moving up the farm system. He’ll start 2022 in the low-A ball and then move up to Double-A Somerset.
Baseball America included Yankees prospects Austin Wells and Everson Pereira in its top 100. Austin Wells, a power-hitting catcher who has been with the Yankees since they picked him in the first round of the 2020 draft, rounds out the group. In his two years as a pro, he has hit 36 home runs. Wells, a left-handed hitter, spent most of 2022 at the Double-A level, but at age 23, he could play in the major leagues if the Yankees’ catcher gets hurt.
On the MLB Pipeline, the Baltimore Orioles have the most 8, including No. 1 Gunnar Henderson and No. 7 Grayson Rodriguez. Cleveland has 7, including No. 16 Daniel Espino. The Dodgers have 7, starting with Diego Cartaya at No. 14. The Rangers got 6, including No. 41 Evan Carter. The Cardinals have five beginning with Jordan Walker (No. 4). The Diamondbacks have 4 and their Corbin Carroll is No. 2.
