The Yankees got unexpected support from a Mets fan when their own fans criticized them. This happened during Monday’s episode of “The Michael Kay Show.” ESPN radio host Don La Greca, who is a big fan of the Mets, shoved aside a Yankees fan when he called to lament about the Bombers’ recent performance.
The Yankees fan called during the show to whine about the New York Yankees, who won two out of three games over the weekend. However, La Greca wasn’t interested in hearing any complaints about the Yankees and criticized him.
La Greca defended Yankees from whining fans
During the show, a caller named Walt from New Jersey caused La Greca to become very upset. Walt complained about the Yankees, saying that they didn’t win “early enough” and questioned why they didn’t use the bunt strategy. This made La Greca upset and frustrated.
La Greca showed good manners by thanking the caller from New Jersey for his call before he started criticizing the comments. The ESPN New York radio host sarcastically commented that there is an additional reward of extra points for winning the game earlier in the contest, which many people seem to be unaware of. He expressed his frustration, mentioning that he also had a team that performs poorly, unable to catch fly balls and pitch accurately.
The team also struggles with running bases effectively. He compared the situation to the movie “The Bad News Bears,” but in this case, it involves a major league team with the highest payroll ever seen in sports.
The radio host expressed his frustration with callers who complained about the Yankees not winning early enough in games, stating that he had grown tired of it. He used strong language to express his annoyance, referring to them as big babies, whiny individuals, and spoiled brats, suggesting they engage in self-distraction or self-soothing activities.
La Greca hailed Yankees, slams Mets
While co-hosting with Peter Rosenberg, La Greca proceeded to highlight the recent success of the Yankees. He mentioned that the team had won two consecutive games against the Texas Rangers and managed to maintain a decent performance despite the absence of their injured superstar player, Aaron Judge.
La Greca expressed his frustration with the Mets by stating that it seemed like their players were more focused on something other than playing baseball, comparing their performance to someone awkwardly handling a football.
Following that, the host instructed his producer to express gratitude to any other callers who were Yankees fans and voiced complaints about their team. However, he also requested that they then ask those callers to “go away.”
Despite Rosenberg’s attempt to shift the conversation, La Greca persisted in expressing his strong opinions. He mentioned that what he had expressed on-air was only a small portion (20 percent) of the frustration he had discussed during their pre-show meeting.
Yankees bunt strategy in question
However, it was the mention of the Yankees’ failure to utilize the bunting strategy that sparked a renewed sense of anger in La Greca. He rhetorically questioned why the team was not utilizing bunting in their gameplay, emphasizing the caller’s lack of baseball knowledge. He then proceeded to scold the caller for their inability to recall which specific player had failed to execute a bunt.
La Greca expressed his frustration towards the caller, noting their lack of knowledge regarding the specific player who didn’t execute a bunt. He suggested that the caller was complaining simply for the sake of complaining and emphasized their inability to recall the player’s identity.
He pointed out that the caller had closely watched the game, even placing their face against the television screen, but was unable to remember the crucial detail. He further highlighted the irony of the caller waiting on hold for 20 minutes without obtaining the necessary information.
Given the current position of the Mets in the MLB as July approaches, it’s understandable why La Greca is feeling frustrated. As the Mets’ season has taken a downward turn, Manager Buck Showalter has found himself under increasing scrutiny and facing criticism.
Over the years on ESPN New York, La Greca has developed a reputation for his on-air meltdowns and outbursts. One incident from last year involved La Greca responding strongly to a Yankees’ caller who criticized a statement the host had made about Joey Gallo, who was struggling at the time. The caller described the host’s comment as one of the most foolish statements they had ever heard.
