The journey of former Yankees slugger Luke Voit has hit another roadblock as he faces yet another setback in his quest to return to the major leagues, this time with the New York Mets.

“It’s just a part of who I am, resilient. You know, if my back’s against the wall, I’m going to fight my way out of it. And you know, it’s hard, it’s on my family, and these last couple years have been difficult, but I still feel like I have a lot to give to the game and (these) guys. And I feel like I can go out and, you know, be a stud again.”  Luke Voit told NJ Advance Media’s Manny Gomez at spring training.

Luke Voit’s optimism led him back to the Mets this offseason, fueled by his belief that he could secure a role as a designated hitter and backup first baseman. However, his aspirations were dashed when the Mets released him on Tuesday, as reported by Mike Meyer of Metsmerized.

Luke Voit’s struggles: Battling back from Major League turbulence

During spring training, Luke Voit struggled to find his rhythm at the plate, managing only four hits, including a solitary home run, across 41 plate appearances. His performance, marred by 14 strikeouts and a .118 batting average against primarily upper-minor league pitchers, failed to make a compelling case for his inclusion in the Mets’ lineup.

While spring training statistics are often considered insignificant, Luke Voit’s underwhelming numbers further complicated his bid to rejuvenate his major league career. Now facing an uncertain future, the 33-year-old finds himself in search of a new opportunity, likely in Triple-A.

Voit’s recent release from the Mets marks another chapter in a turbulent period for the veteran slugger. Last season, he endured a similar fate with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he was cut after 22 games and 74 plate appearances, batting .221 with no home runs. The Mets had previously signed Voit in June of the same year, only to release him in August when it became apparent that he would not receive significant playing time at the MLB level. Despite demonstrating power in Triple-A, including 14 home runs in 37 games with a .264 batting average and a 1.058 OPS, Voit’s struggles at the major league level have persisted.

For Luke Voit, time may be running out as he faces the prospect of dwindling opportunities to prove himself. Following a breakout 2020 season with the Yankees, where he recorded a career-high 22 home runs with a .277 batting average and a .948 OPS, Luke Voit has struggled to replicate his success. His OPS+ plummeted from 157 in 2020 to a mere 53 during his brief stint in Milwaukee, underscoring the challenges he has encountered in maintaining consistency at the plate.

Despite the setbacks, Luke Voit remains steadfast in his determination to overcome adversity. Reflecting on his resilience, he expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back, reaffirming his belief that he still has much to offer to the game. While acknowledging the difficulties he has faced in recent years, Luke Voit remains resolute in his conviction that he can reclaim his status as a standout player in the league.
