New York native Marcus Stroman has officially joined the Yankees, signaling a homecoming through a two-year, $37 million contract unveiled on social media. The agreement includes a potential third-year vesting option contingent on innings pitched.

In an Instagram post, Marcus Stroman proudly declared, “I’m a New York Yankee,” accompanied by images featuring him in Yankees attire, confirming the long-speculated deal.

Despite experiencing a second-half slump and grappling with hip inflammation concerns during his stint with the Cubs last season, the 32-year-old right-hander’s skill and seasoned performance convinced the Yankees to embrace him in the Bronx.

Marcus Stroman showcased All-Star caliber performance in the first half, boasting a 2.96 ERA that ranked fourth in the NL. While injuries contributed to a decline in the latter half, resulting in a final season ERA of 3.95, his established track record, including surpassing 140 innings four times previously, justifies the gamble on the potential third-year option with an $18 million vesting clause.

This move marks Marcus Stroman’s fourth team in six seasons, following stints with the Blue Jays, Mets, and Cubs. Renowned for his effective sinker and elite groundball rate, Stroman brings added depth and experience to the Yankees’ rotation. Beyond statistics and contractual details, Marcus Stroman’s return carries sentimental weight. Growing up on Long Island with dreams of playing for the Bombers, he now has the opportunity to shine in pinstripes. Whether his tenure extends beyond the initial two years remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the Stroman-Yankees narrative has officially commenced.

Controversies involving Marcus Stroman

Substance abuse

Selected in the initial round of the 2012 draft from Duke University, Marcus Stroman faced a 50-game suspension in the minors that same year due to a positive test for Methylhexaneamine. Stroman openly admitted to using the prohibited stimulant, attributing it to an inadvertent error on his part.

Attack on Blue Jays

Marcus Stroman consistently grabs attention, frequently making headlines due to his candid expressions. Throughout his tenure with the Blue Jays, this forthrightness elicited varied responses. Some admired his openness, valuing his readiness to articulate opinions and stand up for teammates. Others found fault in his outspoken nature, questioning the timing and manner of his comments.

Marcus Stroman’s inclination to criticize the Blue Jays’ front office emerged as a recurring theme. On one occasion, he took to Twitter to express discontent with the non-tendering of teammate Ryan Goins, a departure from the norm for MLB players. Following his trade to the Mets in 2019, he publicly voiced dissatisfaction with the Blue Jays’ choice not to extend his contract.

This inclination to voice his thoughts extended beyond internal team matters. In May 2023, when Blue Jays teammate Anthony Bass faced controversy over sharing an anti-LGBTQ+ post, Marcus Stroman tweeted that “none of his teammates or staff want him in their locker room.” While aligning with Stroman’s consistent stance on social justice issues, this straightforward statement further fueled discussions about his inclination toward outspokenness.

Whether seen as refreshing honesty or divisive bluntness, Marcus Stroman’s opinions undeniably capture attention. His readiness to speak out, both for himself and others, initiates conversations and challenges established norms. Whether this approach ultimately wins favor or creates distance with audiences remains a subjective matter.

Revenge on Mets

Throughout his career, Marcus Stroman’s online interactions have generated controversy. During his time with the Mets, he was involved in various online incidents, including a heated exchange with a reporter and inadvertently liking a tweet with offensive content. Marcus Stroman later clarified his stance and denounced racist attacks directed at him.

Upon leaving the Mets in free agency, he liked tweets that questioned the team’s motives based on race, sparking further debate. Additionally, celebrating a strong performance against the Mets as a Cub heightened tensions between the two teams.

Racism

He faced criticism for liking tweets that contained disparaging language towards a particular ethnic group. Last year, he came under fire for liking a tweet that used an offensive slur to refer to Mets beat writer Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. By engaging with tweets that include derogatory terms targeting specific groups, Stroman has invited condemnation of his social media conduct. The MLB player has faced backlash for tacitly endorsing tweets with insensitive language by liking them on the platform.

Tension with the Yankees

Marcus Stroman’s history with the Yankees also includes online tensions. Following his trade to the Mets in 2019, he responded to Yankees GM Brian Cashman’s skepticism about his postseason impact by expressing confidence and criticizing the Yankees’ pitching struggles. These tweets have since been deleted.

“Besides Cole, there’s no current Yankees pitcher who will be anywhere in my league over the next 5-7 years,” Stroman wrote in 2021. “Their pitching always folds in the end. That lineup and payroll should be winning World Series left and right…yet they’re in a drought. Lol.”

While Marcus Stroman’s online presence has been a source of controversy, it is crucial to recognize his broader track record of social activism and advocacy for diverse voices in the game. Ultimately, his online persona adds complexity to his public image, allowing for individual interpretation.

Anti-semitism, June 2023

Marcus Stroman ripped Nike’s decision to cancel its contract with Kyrie Irving following his sharing of “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America…”.

Irving, who faced criticism for sharing a link to a controversial film, saw Nike terminate his contract. On the other hand, Ja Morant, accused of assault and firearm possession, received a two-game suspension from his team. Marcus Stroman expressed his views on Twitter, stating, “Kyrie posted a link, they ended his contract. I always knew Nike was trash.” He later clarified that his concern was about the consistency of action rather than targeting the athletes themselves.

Marcus Stroman’s comments have initiated discussions on the fairness and proportionality of corporate responses to athlete behavior. While some support his call for consistency, others raise concerns about comparing situations involving different athletes and contexts. Notably, Irving’s actions were directly linked to a potentially harmful ideology, while the allegations against Morant are still under investigation.

The only thing worse than this toxic little toddler is a once- great organization giving him millions to come play in the same uniform as great men like Judge, Mattingly, Jeter, Rivera, Munson,… all the way back to Lou Gerhig. The decline of an empire is complete.
