Former Yankees All-Star, Luis Severino, appears to have reached the end of his tenure with the New York Yankees. After battling injuries that hampered his performance in recent seasons, Severino is now a free agent in search of a new team for the 2024 season. Having dedicated his entire eight-year big league career to the Yankees, it seems that his time in the Big Apple has come to a close. Despite this, the pitcher is currently the subject of interest from at least eight different teams in the free agency market, with the Yankees notably absent from the list, as reported by The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty.
Where’s he going to play?
Luis Severino‘s career took a hit in 2023 when he struggled with a high 6.65 ERA across 19 starts, but recent reports indicate that his rehab, particularly for an oblique injury, has progressed well. He is back to throwing and feeling good, sparking interest from multiple teams. Among the potential suitors, the Yankees are not expected to make an offer, signaling a significant shift in his baseball journey.
The 29-year-old pitcher, a two-time All-Star, remains an intriguing prospect for the 2024 season, provided he can maintain his health. Despite his 2023 struggles, Severino displayed his potential in 2022, where he managed a commendable 3.18 ERA over 102 innings pitched in just 19 starts. While his peak performances occurred in 2017 and 2018 when he secured both of his All-Star selections, there is still hope for him to return to that level of excellence.
The key question surrounding Severino’s future is his ability to stay injury-free, which is no small feat. However, if he manages to maintain his health, he could prove to be a valuable addition to a team’s starting rotation, potentially slotting in as a solid No. 3 or No. 4 starter with significant upside. While the specific teams expressing interest in Severino remain undisclosed, it is evident that his return to New York is highly unlikely, marking the end of an era for the former Yankees star.
