Luis Severino was among those who were upset by his move to injured list for 60 days.

Severino, said he was caught off guard Monday when trainers informed him that he would be transferred from the 15-day IL. He has been recovering from a strained lat that has kept him out since his last start on July 13.

Severino expected to be back sooner because he had only been out a few weeks and had started a throwing program on Monday.

He stated that he planned to play catch, throw bullpen sessions, and possibly pitch a simulated game before returning to the rotation later this month.

Cashman stated that this will allow Severino to go through a rehab process while still making about five starts before the postseason. After the trade of Jordan Montgomery to St. Louis, Severino is expected to be in the rotation for the playoffs.

Severino could be pitching from a mound in 10 days, according to Boone.

After adding three players on Monday, including Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino from Oakland and Scott Effross from the Cubs, the Yankees needed to clear space on the 40-man roster. Moving Severino to the 60-day injured list freed up a roster spot.

The team’s monitoring of Severino’s innings after he missed much of the last three seasons due to arm injuries, according to Cashman, did not play a role in the decision.

He added that he won’t know if he’s fully recovered until he faces batters.
