Luis Gil delivered a standout performance, leading the New York Yankees to a 6-1 victory over the first-place Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. This win, just before the All-Star break, marked the Yankees’ first consecutive victories in a month.
“His last outing was [very] much in line with what we saw the first couple months of the season,’’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He found his delivery right away in the first inning and did a good job establishing his fastball. It all comes down to delivery.”
The rookie pitcher, who had faltered in three previous starts following a strong 14-game opening to the season, allowed only one run over six innings. This followed a solid outing against the Red Sox last Sunday, where Luis Gil gave up just one run in 6 ²/₃ innings but didn’t earn the win.
Manager Boone commended his effectiveness, particularly noting the improvement in his slider.
“The slider was really good again,’’ he said. “It speaks to how good he can be when he’s not perfect.”
Boone emphasized that the rookie’s ability to excel without his best stuff showcased his potential. He also revealed that Luis Gil had adjusted his slider grip a couple of weeks ago, which has since become a key part of his pitching repertoire.
Catcher Austin Wells emphasized the significance of Luis Gil’s improved slider, calling it “another plus pitch” to complement his four-seam fastball.
Luis Gil stops his slide, earn Yankees win
Luis Gil’s strong performance was supported by the Yankees’ powerful offensive start, scoring four runs in the first inning. He adeptly handled early threats, stranding two singles in the first.
Despite conceding a run in the fourth inning after Ryan O’Hearn‘s leadoff triple, Luis Gil maintained control throughout his outing. In his 6 innings, he gave up only 1 ER, 5 hits, and 1 bases on ball while striking out 7 Orioles.
Speaking through an interpreter, Luis Gil expressed increased confidence in his modified slider, noting better execution and control of the pitch.
“It’s not slipping away,’’ he said. “I feel comfortable executing the pitch.”
This game marked a notable improvement from Luis Gil’s previous matchup against the Orioles on June 20, which began a tough three-start stretch. In that earlier game, he allowed a season-high seven runs in just 1 ¹/³ innings.
Manager Boone expressed optimism about Luis Gil’s progress, attributing it to recent mechanical adjustments made with pitching coach Matt Blake. These tweaks appeared to have helped him rebound from recent struggles, including challenging outings against the Mets and Reds.
Luis Gil’s resurgence, particularly highlighted in his recent start against Boston, has bolstered the Yankees’ confidence in their pitching rotation as they head into the latter part of the season.
Boone commended the rookie’s recent performance, drawing parallels to his early-season dominance and highlighted his ability to effectively establish his fastball early in games as a key factor in his success.
Though Luis Gil is unlikely to be named to the American League All-Star roster, his consistent outings remain vital to the Yankees‘ long-term aspirations.
Reflecting on his recent struggles, the pitcher emphasized the importance of self-belief and resilience during tough periods in an athlete’s career.
The manager praised Luis Gil’s focus and ability to overcome adversity, suggesting these qualities would aid in his development as a pitcher. Boone expressed confidence in the pitcher’s potential to handle the demands of major league baseball, highlighting the young pitcher’s resilience and adaptability.
