The narrow 5-4 victory of the Yankees over the Rays on Sunday witnessed next-level pitching by Luis Gil. The starter, who stumbled in his last outing, rebounded with stuff that was much more than just impressive and a far cry from the game that allowed seven walks in Toronto.
Manager Aaron Boone lauded Luis Gil’s ability to consistently find the strike zone, emphasizing the significance of his command in unleashing his full potential on the mound. The game marked a positive development for Luis Gil, particularly following a challenging outing against the Blue Jays where he struggled with walks, issuing seven in that game alone.
“It’s a really good peek at how good he is when he’s filling up the strike zone,” the Yankees skipper said about the pitcher.
The pitcher has showcased remarkable consistency in his four starts, keeping opposing hitters at bay with his impressive pitching repertoire, as evidenced by Luis Gil’s ability to limit hits to three or fewer in each outing. However, his Achilles’ heel thus far had been his struggles with walks, issuing a concerning 14 free passes in 14 innings pitched, preventing him from extending his appearances beyond the fifth inning.
In the series finale against the Rays, there was a noticeable improvement in Luis Gil’s command on the mound. This newfound control allowed him to navigate through the Rays’ lineup effectively, culminating in a career-best performance of nine strikeouts while lasting into the sixth inning. The Yankees clinched the series in the Bronx, underscoring Luis Gil’s pivotal role in the win.
Throughout the contest, Luis Gil demonstrated command over his pitches, with the lone run he conceded stemming from two self-inflicted errors—a wild throw on a pickoff attempt and a balk. Despite walking three batters, including the final two he faced in the sixth inning, His overall performance showcased a marked improvement in his control and efficiency.
With his pitch count reaching 97, Luis Gil eventually ran out of steam, prompting his departure from the game. However, his efforts secured the second major league win of his career, marking a significant milestone since his last victory on August 3, 2021. Luis Gil’s journey back to the majors has been arduous, including Tommy John surgery and limited appearances in the minor leagues last year, making this triumph all the more meaningful.
Luis Gil carries Yankees rotation well in Cole’s absence
Luis Gil, the towering 6-foot-2 right-hander, wasn’t initially slated for the starting rotation. Early in spring training, he was destined for minor league camp. However, Gerrit Cole’s elbow injury necessitated a change in plans. Gil seized the opportunity, surpassing expectations and outperforming competitors like Will Warren and Clayton Beeter.
Manager Aaron Boone commended Luis Gil’s readiness, specifically highlighting his impressive performance and command during spring training. These factors ultimately earned him a spot in the rotation. With a solid 2.75 ERA over four starts, Luis Gil has justified the Yankees’ decision.
While his early success is encouraging, Luis Gil acknowledges room for growth, particularly in his control. Speaking through an interpreter, he emphasized the importance of adaptation in baseball. The young pitcher revealed his dedication to video analysis, a proactive approach that helps him identify areas for improvement and develop a sense of comfort and consistency on the mound.
“When you play this game, you understand this is a game of adjustments,” he told. “I really enjoy that. I enjoy watching video of what I do and pick up on the little things that are not working correctly. … It allowed me to be more comfortable on the mound and more consistent.”
This commitment to continuous development suggests a promising future for Luis Gil.
