Right-handed pitcher Michael King is confident that when the New York Yankees are at their best, they are better than the Houston Astros, the reigning World Series champions.
During a talk on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, the pitcher told:
“There’s no chance that an Astros team can stop us when we’re rolling.”
“They’re definitely our kryptonite. I would say that. Even when we played them during the regular season, it wasn’t pretty.”
King added, “Every offseason move that we make, you can see the Twitterverse going nuts like, ‘Is this enough to beat the Astros?’ It’s never just, ‘Is this enough to be a World Series team?'”
In recent years, the Yankees have had trouble against Houston and players like King see the Astros as their greatest opponents. Last year, the Astros swept them in the ALCS after the Yankees went 2-5 against them in the regular season. Since 2015, the Yankees have been knocked out of the playoffs four times by the Astros.
King, who was an important part of the Yankees’ bullpen until he broke his right elbow, said that the team’s problems against the Astros were mostly due to injuries. He also said that the trade deadline from last year “threw off the locker room.”
Losing King was a huge setback for the Yankees, especially since he was their most reliable reliever at age 27. In 51 innings, he had a 2.29 ERA and 11.65 strikeouts per nine. He was almost certain to make the All-Star team and turned out to be one of the best players.
King told The Athletic earlier that he would be fit to play for the Yankees this season and don the role of a multi-inning stopper.
