Rizzo Belts 3 Home Runs for The Yankees

Anthony Rizzo is settling in well to his new surroundings after spending 9 ½ seasons at Wrigley Field.

Rizzo hit three home runs into Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch, Aaron Judge homered on his birthday, and Joey Gallo ended his career’s longest home-run drought as New York defeated the Baltimore Orioles 12-8 Tuesday night.

Gleyber Torres added a bases-loaded triple in the seventh inning, and the earlier slumping Yankees responded to Sunday’s 10-run outburst against Cleveland with another barrage, winning for the sixth time in seven games.

Rizzo hit his 6th, 7th, and 8th home runs for six RBI, Judge decided to join Lou Gehrig and Jerry Mumphrey as Yankees to homer on their 30th birthdays, and Gallo connected for its first time in 23 games, snapping a 23-game slump that dated back to last season.

For New York, Luis Severino (2-0) pitched a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Jorge Mateo’s one-out single, as well as Anthony Santander decided to follow very few batters later with a three-run homer, sparking a homer-filled finish.

The Orioles scored four runs against one bullpen with a 2.44 ERA entering Tuesday, led by Austin Hays’ three-run homer off Jonathan Loaisiga.

Rizzo hit a 3 shot in the third which barely cleared the first row in right field, a two-run shot in the fifth, and a bizarre solo homer in the 8th.

The left-handed batter stood near home plate, certain that his high fly arc down the right-field line would go foul. The ball curved back toward play and landed inside of the foul pole atop the 314-foot mark.

Before beginning his trot, he did give the dugout a puzzled look, then tried to take a curtain call for fans after a replay review upheld the 1st three-homer match of his career.

Gallo finished his drought in the fourth inning with a solo shot off Jordan Lyles (1-2). In the dugout, fellow players gave him the silent treatment before breaking out big grins as well as hugs for the 28-year-old slugger. Gallo went long 38 times last season, including 13 after being traded to New York in the middle of the season.

Severino was removed after allowing a leadoff double to Rougned Odor in the seventh inning. On 77 pitches, the right-hander allowed 4 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 5 batters in his 5th start of the season.
