Former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter recently voiced his support for manager Aaron Boone amid the team’s struggles. Speaking on FS1’s “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” Jeter defended Boone against accusations that his player-friendly approach might be too lenient.

Jeter underscored the value of having a “players’ manager” in modern baseball, commending Boone’s background as a former player. He noted Boone’s deep understanding of the highs and lows inherent in a 162-game season.

“I wouldn’t necessarily buy that. You have to be a players’ manager to be successful, especially in this day and age,” the Yankees said. “The great thing about Aaron: Aaron played the game. He understands that you’re going to have struggles throughout the course of a six-month season. You play 162 games and you’re going to struggle. I think he’s done a great job. Ultimately, it falls on the players. Those are the ones that are on the field, playing the games, actually.

The Hall of Famer emphasized that the players, not the manager, bear ultimate responsibility for the team’s performance on the field. Jeter highlighted that it is the players who directly influence game outcomes.

Jeter’s remarks come as the Yankees have cooled off following a strong start. After a 49-21 record through June 12, the team entered the All-Star break at 58-40. Critics have pointed to lapses in player effort and fundamentals, with some attributing these issues to Boone’s management style and his reluctance to publicly criticize players.

Jeter backs Boone amid crticism

Jeter recently responded to the criticism directed at manager Boone for being “little (too) buddy-buddy with players.” While admitting he hasn’t been closely following the critiques, Jeter suggested they might be unfair, emphasizing that the players are ultimately responsible for their on-field performance. He noted that criticism is a natural part of playing in New York due to the high expectations.

“But I would say I haven’t paid much attention to the criticism, and criticism is part of playing in New York, especially when the expectation level is where it is,” Jeter said. “But if he is getting heavily criticized, I think it’s a bit unfair because ultimately the players are the ones that play.”

Despite recent struggles, the Yankees remain competitive, just one game behind the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East and leading the wild-card race by 3.5 games. Their overall pitching and hitting stats rank among MLB’s top five, though their recent performance has dipped.

The team has faced challenges, such as Giancarlo Stanton’s absence, which has placed a heavier burden on Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. While some players, including Ben Rice and Trent Grisham, have shown promise, there are increasing calls from fans for Boone to adopt a more assertive approach.

As the Yankees strive to regain their earlier form, Boone’s management style and the team’s performance continue to be closely examined.
