Following the New York Yankees’ 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Game 1 of the ALDS, baseball legends Derek Jeter, David Ortiz, and Alex Rodriguez weighed in on Aaron Judge and the team’s performance.
Jeter highlighted the significance of the Yankees’ ability to win when their star player is not at his best. Jeter stressed that for the Bombers to make a deep postseason run, contributions from the entire roster will be essential, not just from Judge. He saw the game as a promising indication that other players can rise to the occasion when needed, asserting that this victory without a standout performance from Judge is a positive sign for the team’s prospects.
“In order for the Yankees to win a World Series, it’s gonna take more than Aaron Judge,” Jeter said. “Everyone’s gonna have to step up. If you look at this game here, other guys in the lineup stepped up, so that’s a positive for the Yankees. Today’s a good sign that they are able to win without him.”
This discussion among baseball icons comes amid Judge’s remarkable season, in which he led the majors with 58 home runs and is positioned as a frontrunner for the American League MVP award in November.
However, he also offered an optimistic assessment, noting that the ALDS Game 1 win was especially uplifting for Yankees fans considering how the underdogs carried the team to win. He pointed out that the team managed to secure a victory despite challenges, including Gerrit Cole’s early exit and a subdued outing from Judge. Jeter emphasized that this result would be particularly satisfying for the Yankees organization as they prepare for Game 2 of the series.
“It’s great news if you’re a Yankees fan,” the Bronx legend added. “In a game like this, you would assume Gerrit Cole would go seven or eight innings, Judge would have a huge game, wasn’t the case, and they still were able to win. If you’re the Yankees, you’re ecstatic going into game two.”
Jeter’s advice to current Yankees captain
As one of Major League Baseball’s standout players this season, Aaron Judge faces high expectations from Yankees fans as the team enters the playoffs. With the franchise’s World Series title drought stretching back to 2009, many supporters are hopeful this could be the year they reclaim the championship.
However, Judge’s postseason start in 2024 was less than stellar, as he went hitless in four at-bats during the ALDS opener. Former Yankees captain Jeter weighed in on how Judge should handle this performance.
Jeter advised Judge to treat this game as a standalone event and not let it weigh down his mindset from past experiences. He emphasized the importance of the Yankees‘ victory and suggested that Judge use the day off to reset before striving for a stronger performance in Game 2.
“If you’re Aaron, you just chalk this up as one game,” Jeter suggested to Judge. “You can’t try to group it all together with what happens in years past. It’s one game, the Yankees won, you got tomorrow off, and then you come back and have a good game in game two.”
The former captain expressed confidence in Judge’s ability to rebound, predicting an improved showing in the next contest.
Jeter’s insights hold significant weight, considering his illustrious career with the Yankees, which includes five World Series championships. His advice may prove crucial for Judge as he navigates the challenges of postseason play.
For Judge, winning a World Series title remains a key objective in an otherwise impressive career. Yankees fans are optimistic that their current captain can follow in the footsteps of their former leader and lead the team back to championship glory.
