The New York Yankees are bringing in fresh talent to bolster their roster. The team announced Friday that Jorbit Vivas, a standout infield prospect, has been called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Vivas’s promotion comes as JD Davis heads to the injured list due to a stomach flu.
What happened
Vivas, 23, has been making waves in Triple-A, batting .258 with an .828 OPS over 37 games. His recent performance has been particularly noteworthy; over the last 19 games, he has hit .333 with a 1.113 OPS and five home runs. The Yankees are hoping that Vivas can bring some of that hot streak to the major leagues.
JD Davis, acquired from the Oakland A’s, has struggled to find his rhythm with the Yankees, going just 1-for-13 with two walks in 15 plate appearances. His time on the injured list opens up an opportunity for Vivas, who has shown strong bat-to-ball skills and surprising pop during his stint in the minors.
Vivas’s promotion suggests that the Yankees see potential for him to make an immediate impact. Manager Aaron Boone hinted that Vivas could be utilized in a platoon role at second base or third base, positions where both Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu have struggled this season. LeMahieu, who was hit by a foul ball on Wednesday, is expected to return to the lineup soon despite the scare.
The Yankees acquired Vivas from the Dodgers in December, alongside now-DFA’d reliever Victor Gonzalez. Vivas made a strong impression during big league camp but suffered a left orbital fracture on the final day of camp, delaying his season start. After an initial return in late April and a subsequent setback, Vivas has been fully back in action since late May.
The Yankees are eager to see if Vivas can translate his minor league success to the majors and help turn around their season. With the AL East race heating up, Vivas’s arrival could provide the spark the Yankees need.
