The New York Yankees made the MLB Playoffs in 2024, achieving their first goal after last year’s disappointment. Now, with Juan Soto as a centerpiece, they’re aiming for a deep postseason run. But once the season ends, Juan Soto will enter free agency, and the Yankees’ ability to retain him remains uncertain.

Juan Soto joined the Yankees via trade last offseason, knowing it might be just a one-year stint before he hit the open market. With his talent and age, Juan Soto is expected to chase a record-breaking payday, something the Yankees may not be in a position to match.

Yankees could be outbid for Juan Soto’s services

Buster Olney, appearing on Pinstripe Territory, cast doubt on the Yankees’ ability to keep Juan Soto, saying, “We don’t know if Soto truly wants to stay with the Yankees or if he’s seeking a record deal elsewhere. If it’s the latter, I think the Yankees will be outbid in the end. I can’t see Hal Steinbrenner going to extreme numbers, especially with teams like the Mets and owner Steve Cohen who could easily outspend everyone else.”

With Juan Soto set to command more than $500 million, it begs the question: can the Yankees afford to keep him alongside the big contracts of Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, and Giancarlo Stanton? Despite some payroll relief on the horizon, the Yankees face the tough reality of the competitive balance tax.

Juan Soto just wrapped up his first 40-home run season, posting a .989 OPS, scoring 128 runs, drawing 129 walks, and hitting 31 doubles. His talent is undeniable, and his market value reflects that. However, experts like Olney suggest the Yankees may be outmatched when it comes to offering Juan Soto the massive contract he’s expected to earn.
