The New York Yankees have taken significant strides to strengthen their bullpen ahead of the 2025 season. After a shaky showing during the American League Championship Series and the Fall Classic, the Yankees have bolstered their relief corps by adding Devin Williams and Fernando Cruz, exercising Luke Weaver’s club option, and bringing back Jonathan Loaisiga. These moves have fortified a previously inconsistent unit, but the team will need more contributions to compete at the highest level.

One name to watch is Scott Effross, the sidearming right-hander whose Yankees tenure has been derailed by injuries. Acquired in 2022 to provide a unique edge to the bullpen, Effross flashed potential with a 2.54 ERA over 56.2 innings that year, split between the Chicago Cubs and New York. Unfortunately, injuries have limited him to just 3.1 innings since then, with his 2025 status uncertain until recently. Effross avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $800,000 contract, according to MLB insider Robert Murray, securing his place in the organization for another season.

Effross made his return to health last summer, but questions about the sharpness of his stuff lingered, prompting the Yankees to rely on other bullpen options. Despite these concerns, there’s optimism about what Effross could bring to the table if he regains his form. At 31, he remains in his prime and could offer the Yankees a valuable weapon against right-handed hitters—a crucial need in the bullpen.

The Yankees would welcome a return to the version of Effross that excelled in 2022. His ability to generate weak contact and navigate high-leverage situations made him a standout reliever during that campaign. If he can recapture that form, his modest salary could make him one of the team’s best bargains.

Effross faces stiff competition for a spot on the Opening Day roster. The Yankees have a mix of prospects, non-roster invitees, and rehabbing pitchers all vying for limited bullpen roles. The team’s depth ensures no reliever’s position is guaranteed, creating an environment where only the best performers will make the cut.

While Effross’s future with the Yankees hinges on his ability to deliver results in spring training, his upside makes him a player worth monitoring. The Yankees, intent on building a championship-caliber bullpen, understand that every contributor matters. Effross has shown he can be a difference-maker in the past, and if he’s able to bounce back, he could provide a significant boost to the team’s title aspirations in 2025.
