The New York Yankees have expressed prolonged interest in acquiring Juan Soto, and with the MLB offseason in full swing, the prospect of this becoming a reality has gained traction. The Yankees, perennially on the lookout for superstar talent, find in Soto the precise type of player they require.

Jeff Passan from ESPN expressed his belief that the Yankees stand a strong chance of acquiring Juan Soto. He suggested that the team has a significant opportunity to make a move for him.

The recently turned 25-year-old is coming off a season where he delivered another remarkable performance at the plate. His offensive prowess since entering the big leagues has been truly impressive, highlighted by not only the 35 home runs but also his exceptional ability to get on base, as evidenced by his 132 walks. Juan Soto’s skill set aligns perfectly with the needs of the Yankees’ offense.

The San Diego Padres face significant decisions this offseason, with one of the most pivotal being the fate of star outfielder Juan Soto. As he enters the final year of his contract, there’s speculation that the team might explore trading him this winter.

Given their urgent need for an outfielder, the addition of a player of Juan Soto’s caliber aligns perfectly with the team’s needs. Moreover, considering the dimensions of the right field porch at Yankee Stadium, this potential move appears to be an ideal fit for both the player and the team.

The ongoing question revolves around what San Diego seeks in a trade. Nevertheless, the Yankees possess the prospect depth to facilitate the deal. With five prospects listed in the top 100 by MLB.com, the Yankees could potentially include Spencer Jones, Everson Pereira, Chase Hampton, and Drew Thorpe in negotiations for a player of Juan Soto’s caliber.

Padres are discussing Juan Soto trade

Recent reports have provided conflicting information regarding the team’s intentions, but ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan now suggests that the Padres have internally discussed the possibility of moving Juan Soto.

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com, the most logical conclusion in this scenario would involve the Padres trading Juan Soto, especially considering his anticipated salary of around $33 million in his final arbitration year. While logic doesn’t always dictate decisions, it would be a negative reflection on the team to trade prospects like James Wood, C.J. Abrams, Mackenzie Gore, Robert Hassell, and Jarlin Susana only to potentially reverse course after a short period. Passan indicated that internally, the Padres have reportedly considered their options in case they decide to move Juan Soto.

This could mark the beginning of a potential course of action for the Padres, and Jeff Passan, known for having insight into such matters, is reporting this development. The Padres are in a position where they need to reduce payroll this offseason, and trading Juan Soto appears to be one of the most viable avenues to achieve that goal.

Given the team’s apparent reluctance to commit to a long-term deal with Juan Soto and the financial constraints involved, trading him to acquire assets before he reaches free agency seems like a logical and strategic move.

Juan Soto remains among the top-tier players globally, making it probable for the Padres to secure a substantial return in any potential trade. The assets acquired could be preserved or redirected to enhance other aspects of the roster, creating a more balanced and competitive team.

San Diego holds several options this offseason, but a decisive resolution regarding Juan Soto is crucial. Once the team addresses this matter, it can proceed with its winter plans and concentrate on positioning itself for contention in the 2024 season.

I’d love to see Soto hitting behind or in front of Judge, but I wouldn’t give up the house for only 1 year of Soto.

Since this would only be a 1 year deal, at this point, trading Spencer Jones, Everson Pereira, Chase Hampton, and Drew Thorpe would be a VAST overpay.

First, eliminate Drew Thorpe, as well as The Martian, who wasn’t mentioned here but has been mentioned elsewhere. No Way on Thorpe or The Martian; only someone as stupid as Cashman would include either of those two: so, sadly, I’m saying there’s a chance ;-(.

A package of Spencer Jones, Everson Pereira, and Chase Hampton seems sufficient, plus, possibly, a low-level prospect, if needed & depending on who that low-level prospect is, given that the Yankees have an exceptional group that’ll be entering A-ball this coming season.

Keep in mind while it would be great to have Soto, you can always sign him next off-season when he’s a free agent. So, it makes little sense to sell off the future for one year of Soto if it means including either Thorpe or The Martian.

While prospects are often called suspects, that doesn’t mean you should use their prospect capital unwisely.
Prospect capital is a real, tangible asset, and it should be deployed judiciously.
