New York Yankees 0, Texas Rangers 2
ARLINGTON, Texas — For his first career shutout in the major leagues, Nathan Eovaldi threw a complete game three-hitter over nine innings. Ezequiel Duran’s two-run homer in the fifth inning was the difference as the Texas Rangers defeated the uninspired New York Yankees, 2-0, on Saturday night. New York has now lost five of their last seven games.
The Yankees’ captain, Aaron Judge, has missed the past two games with a little hip strain. On the bench he found company in Josh Donaldson, Harrison Bader, and Giancarlo Stanton. For the first time this year, New York was held scoreless, and in five of its last seven games, they have scored two runs or less.
“Classic Nate when he’s really on top of it. He kind of bullied us,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He used both sides of the plate, was a little bit unpredictable between slowing us down a little bit with the curveball.”
In his Yankees debut, Jake Bauers was pulled before the end of the first inning. While trying to catch Adolis Garca’s drive, he charged full speed and collided with the left field wall, injuring his knee.
The game ended with Travis Jankowski on second base after the 27-year-old threw himself to the ground while holding on to the ball. According to New York, X-rays came back negative.
At Globe Life Field, Eovaldi (3-2) faced off against one of his former teams in front of a record crowd of 40,027. He set a new career high with eight strikeouts and allowed no walks.
For Boston last October 4, he pitched five scoreless innings before rain ended the game. This was the first shutout ever thrown by a Texas pitcher at Globe Life Field (which debuted in 2020) and Eovaldi’s third perfect game overall.
Rookie Jhony Brito (2-3) allowed two runs on four hits in five innings.
