Due to his current health condition, Yankees radio voice John Sterling will be absent from the upcoming home series against the San Diego Padres as well as the Yankees’ subsequent West Coast trip.
The anticipation is for John Sterling, who is 84 years old, to resume his position in the Yankees’ broadcast booth on June 6th.
Although the illness is preventing him from participating, it has been stated that the condition is not considered severe.
“Don’t worry about me, you can tell your readers,” Sterling told The New York Post. “I’ll be back soon.”
Following his absence from the Yankees upcoming trips to Seattle and Los Angeles, John Sterling’s total number of missed games for the Yankees will reach 23 out of the team’s initial 61 games.
Justin Shackil will maintain his role as Suzyn Waldman’s temporary replacement and will serve as her partner for all of the upcoming games. Shackil was brought on board by WFAN this year with the specific purpose of providing backup for John Sterling whenever necessary.
But will he be as good as the Yankees’ most-known radio voice?

To me John will always be the voice of the Yankees. I like Justin. He just needs to slow down, and give the total (runs, hits, errors, left on base) at the end of each half inning before they go to break.
Justin has been doing an admirable job. No one can replace John, but Justin has been finding his groove.
Suzyn. Please stay healthy. We love & need you.
John and Suzyn are the most entertaining voices on any baseball broadcast . They’re Hall of Fame credential.
Prayers 🙏 for a speedy recovery for John Sterling!
Get well John! Certainly missed. Great job by Justin.
As Suzyn says for the first pitch intro …
And now for the first pitch , here is John
Sterling , THE VOICE of the NY Yankees .
The voice is certainly missed .. get well John
I have been listening to John since day 1, Justin does a good job but there is only 1 John Sterling. I feel as if I know him and find myself talking to the radio at times. The games don’t feel the same in his absence. Be well John and get back soon.
Hall of Fame announcer. The Best of the best. Get well soon john
