Aaron Hicks only heard cheers once, when he caught a routine fly ball in the fifth inning. The crowd in the Bronx was sarcastically proud, and Joey Gallo’s fans may have found their next favorite player.

Hicks let a catchable ball drop to allow the Rays’ first run and grounded into a bases-loaded double play in Monday’s 4-0 loss.

In the second inning of a scoreless game, with runners on first and second and two outs, Hicks struck out. When there are runners in scoring position, Hicks is hitting just .173, which ranks fifth worst in baseball.

In the top of the fourth inning, Hicks’s night went from disappointing to upsetting.

Hicks misjudged a high fly ball by David Peralta to start the inning. He drifted back and got off the warning track. He lunged for the ball at the last second, and it went for a triple. The Rays took the lead on Isaac Paredes’ RBI single.

Hicks had a chance to redeem himself in the bottom of the inning, but the night went from bad to worse.

The Yankees were already down 1-0 because of Hicks’s glove, so they put their No. 9 batter on base with one out. Hicks hit a tapper back to the pitcher, Ryan Yarbrough. Yarbrough threw to the catcher, Francisco Mejia, who threw to the first baseman, Ji-Man Choi, for a double play that ended the inning.

The biggest boos came when Hicks looked down in anger. Hicks said that it is harder to get back on his feet when people make fun of him everywhere he goes.

This season, Hicks’ double play with the bases full was the most in baseball.

Hicks got one more turn at bat, and when he stepped up to the plate, he was met with loud boos. When he grounded out, his OPS dropped to.644.

Boone kept talking about “a couple of people who are struggling a little bit with their confidence right now,” but he never said who they were.

For now, Hicks is the only option for a team that doesn’t want Aaron Judge to play a lot in center field.

Harrison Bader could come back from the injured list next month, but the player they got in exchange for Jordan Montgomery has plantar fasciitis. He is in a walking boot and might not be able to play baseball for about two weeks.

It sounds like the people at Yankee Stadium would rather have Bader take over center field even though he is hurt.
