Haggerty’s Pinch-hit Homer in the 7th Inning Breaks a 6-6 Tie
After blowing a four-run lead, the Seattle Mariners held on for an 8-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday. Pinch-hitter Sam Haggerty hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning, and Andrés Muoz escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth.
Haggerty batted for left-handed hitter Jarred Kelenic against left-hander Lucas Luetge (3-4) and broke a 6-6 tie with a 1-0 cutter into the left-field seats.
Haggerty homered two days after receiving stitches above an eye from being hit by his helmet, which was thrown after he failed on a bunt.
Haggerty, who had gone 0 for 10 in his big league career as a pinch hitter. connected after Josh Donaldson hit a tying two-run homer off Logan Gilbert in the sixth, Donaldson’s first homer since July 8.
After DJ LeMahieu singled and Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo walked, Muoz loaded the bases with two outs, throwing at up to 102.6 mph. Muoz recorded his second save by striking out pinch-hitter Gleyber Torres on a slider.
Eugenio Suárez and Cal Raleigh hit early home runs off Jameson Taillon, who walked four batters and allowed all four to score. Taillon allowed six runs, five of which were earned, in 4 2/3 innings of work after New York traded fellow starter Jordan Montgomery to St. Louis in exchange for Gold Glove-winning center fielder Harrison Bader.
Before the game, Seattle added two injured players from San Francisco: left-hander Matthew Boyd and catcher Curt Casali. The Mariners also acquired Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Jake Lamb.
Raleigh reached Monument Park in the second inning after Suárez hit a two-run home run three batters in.
Carlos Santana drove in three runs just one night after reaching the 1,500-hit milestone. In the third inning, he hit a sacrifice fly to put Seattle up 4-0, and he added a two-run double in the fifth.
In the ninth inning, Adam Frazier drove in two runs off Albert Abreu. The Yankees then introduced Lou Trivino, who pitched to catcher Jose Trevino.
Scott Effross, another reliever acquired by New York this week, made his Yankees debut in the seventh inning.
Donaldson, who came in with a 3-for-32 slump, started a three-run fourth with an RBI double. Trevino hit a two-run homer, bringing his season total to ten, one more than his career total entering the season.
Rizzo began the sixth inning by homering for the fourth time in as many games. Following Matt Carpenter’s single, Donaldson tied the game with a first-pitch fastball into the New York bullpen.
Gilbert pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed six runs and seven hits.
Penn Murfee (2-0) gave up a Trevino double and an infield single to Isiah Kiner-Falefa before turning a double play to end the sixth.
