After the Game, Yankees Fans Pelted Cleveland Outfielders with Debris

On Saturday, after New York rallied for a 5-4 victory, some spectators in the typically noisy right-field bleachers at Yankee Stadium showered Cleveland outfielders with bottles, cans, and trash in a chaotic scene.

With two outs in the ninth and RBI hits by Isiah Kiner-Falefa and pinch-hitter Gleyber Torres, New York players Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and others ran to the wall in right-center field to attempt to quiet the fans.

When Kiner-Falefa doubled off Emmanuel Clase (0-2) of Cleveland with a fastball traveling at 100 mph, the game was still tied at 3-3. A trainer went out to check on rookie left fielder Steven Kwan after he crashed into the wall while chasing the ball.

Before the game started again, Mercado gestured toward the crowd, and center fielder Myles Straw scaled the chain-link fence to the left to speak with at least one fan face-to-face.

Torres then scored the winning run with a single down the right-field line. Several supporters started hurling objects toward Mercado and Straw as they chased the ball in the gap.

Following an unusual bullpen meltdown, the Yankees triumphed for the 4th time in five games and earned their second walk-off victory. They weren’t happy with the conclusion scene.

With two outs in the eighth, Chad Green gave up Austin Hedges’ two-run home run, which gave Cleveland the lead 4-3. Miguel Castro (1-0) threw a ninth-inning no-hitter.

Cleveland’s only hit against Nestor Cortes throughout 6 1/3 innings came on a two-run home run by Josh Naylor.

In the seventh inning, Josh Donaldson hit a home run off Cal Quantrill to put the Yankees ahead 3-2.

Cleveland will start RHP Aaron Civale (0-1, 6.14 ERA) in the game against New York RHP Gerrit Cole (0-0, 6.35). Tuesday at Detroit, Cole pitched a career-low 1 2/3 innings.
