The New York Yankees have been having a hard time the past few weeks, but they could soon get a boost to their lineup.
The Athletic reports that Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Wednesday that it’s “possible” that Giancarlo Stanton could come back from his leg injury next week. The team hopes he will be able to start a rehab assignment in the minor leagues this weekend.
Stanton was put on the injured list for the second time this season on July 26, but it was backdated to July 24 because he had tendonitis in his left Achilles. He was also on IL in May because he hurt his right calf. The man, who is 32, is cutting. In 80 games, he hit .228/.309/.498 with 24 home runs and 61 RBI.
In Stanton’s absence, the Yankees have lost 7 of 14 games and have only scored 9 runs in their last seven games. At 3-and-11 in August, New York has the worst record in the major leagues.
The Yankees made a lot of changes to their team before their last game of the series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. They had lost their last three games. New York called up Estevan Florial, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Ron Marinaccio, and put All-Star closer Clay Holmes on the injured list. Cabrera will play his first game in the major leagues. Tim Locastro and Miguel Andujar, who were both outfielders, were sent to Triple-A.
Even though they have been struggling lately, the Yankees (72-45) are still in first place in the AL East. They have a nine-game lead over the Rays, who are in second place as of Wednesday. Still, the team can’t be happy with how it has been playing as the regular season comes to a close.
New York is sure to hope that Stanton will be at his best when he comes back. If the team wants to win its first World Series since 2009, it will need him to be at his best.
