The New York Yankees have activated slugger Giancarlo Stanton from the 10-day injured list and designated infielder/outfielder Jahmai Jones for assignment, the team announced Monday.

Yankees Activate Giancarlo Stanton, Designate Jahmai Jones for Assignment

Stanton, who had been sidelined since June 22 with a left hamstring strain, returns to the lineup after missing over a month. The injury occurred during a game against the Atlanta Braves, where Stanton strained his hamstring while running the bases. He was promptly removed from the game and placed on the injured list the following day.

Prior to his injury, Stanton was a key contributor to the Yankees’ offense, hitting 18 home runs in 69 games. However, his injury history has been a concern, with the 34-year-old outfielder/DH playing in more than 110 games only once since his first season with the Yankees in 2018.

In Stanton’s absence, the Yankees struggled offensively, going 10-18, which is only better than the Chicago White Sox in that span. The team’s other stars, including Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, faced more challenges as opposing pitchers were able to pitch around them without Stanton’s presence in the lineup.

Jones, who joined the Yankees during spring training, managed to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster due to injuries to other key players, such as DJ LeMahieu. He appeared in 33 games but had limited success, recording just 47 plate appearances. Despite his limited role, Jones made a memorable impact with his first career home run on Mother’s Day.

The Yankees had hoped to mitigate Stanton’s frequent absences by strengthening their lineup depth, but the strategy fell short. Players like Gleyber Torres, Alex Verdugo, Anthony Volpe, and LeMahieu were unable to fill the void left by Stanton’s injury effectively.

Stanton will bat fifth in his return game against the Philadelphia Phillies, a move that the Yankees hope will bolster their lineup. The team opted not to send Stanton on a rehab assignment, a decision they have made in the past with the veteran slugger. Manager Aaron Boone and the Yankees’ staff are banking on Stanton’s ability to quickly regain his form and provide the much-needed power in the lineup.

With Stanton back, the Yankees aim to turn their season around and improve their standing in the highly competitive American League East. The team’s recent struggles have highlighted the importance of their star players’ health and availability, and Stanton’s return is a significant step in the right direction.

The Yankees’ front office, led by General Manager Brian Cashman, will continue to monitor the team’s performance and make adjustments as necessary. The designation of Jones for assignment is part of the ongoing roster management to ensure the team has the best possible lineup for the remainder of the season.

The Yankees face the Phillies tonight, hoping that Stanton’s return will mark the beginning of a stronger, more consistent offensive performance as they push for a playoff spot in the second half of the season.
