As stated by the Washington Post, the New York Yankees star pitcher Gerrit Cole made significant strides in his recovery from an elbow injury sustained during spring training. In his third bullpen session since the setback, Cole delivered 29 pitches, including a mix of breaking balls, demonstrating promising signs of progress.

During the session, Gerrit Cole unleashed 13 curveballs, complemented by a fastball that clocked in at 89 mph. Reflecting on his performance, Cole expressed satisfaction with his fastball’s velocity, pinpointing accuracy, and overall command. He remarked positively on the “good” profiles of his fastballs and the abundance of strikes he delivered.

Looking ahead, Gerrit Cole outlined plans for future mound sessions, aiming to simulate two innings in upcoming outings as he inches closer to facing live hitters. While the exact timeline remains uncertain, his focus remains on gradually ramping up his workload and readiness for game action.

Meanwhile, Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided updates on other players’ rehabilitation progress.

Yankees injury updates

Outfielder Jasson Domínguez is slated to serve as the designated hitter for Single-A Tampa, marking a significant step in his recovery from a right elbow injury that necessitated Tommy John surgery. Similarly, infielder DJ LeMahieu, sidelined with a right foot injury, engaged in live batting practice and is nearing a return to game action following additional pitching tests.

Pitcher JT Brubaker, acquired from Pittsburgh, showcased his progress after sitting out the previous season due to Tommy John surgery. His inclusion in the Yankees’ pitching plans underscores the team’s depth and readiness to integrate returning players into the lineup.

Reliever Tommy Kahnle, grappling with a right shoulder ailment, exhibited promising signs during his outing with Single-A Tampa, striking out one batter in a flawless inning. His impending move to Double-A Somerset signals continued progress towards a potential return to the major league bullpen.

As Gerrit Cole remains stationed in Tampa following the Yankees’ series with the Rays, anticipation mounts for his next mound session, slated for Tuesday. With the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner poised to make his season debut no earlier than June, the organization remains cautiously optimistic about his recovery trajectory.

Gerrit Cole’s journey back to full strength comes amidst the backdrop of his high-stakes contract and looming free agency decision. Armed with the option to opt out after the season, Cole holds the key to his future, with the Yankees retaining leverage to nullify the opt-out clause by adding a guaranteed salary for 2029.

Last season, Gerrit Cole’s dominance on the mound earned him the prestigious AL Cy Young Award, marking a significant milestone for the Yankees franchise. With an impressive record, including a league-leading 2.63 ERA and 222 strikeouts, Cole solidified his status as a cornerstone of the team’s pitching rotation.
