The New York Yankees could face a tricky contract dilemma this offseason with their star pitcher Gerrit Cole, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The ace, who has an opt-out clause in his current contract, may choose to test free agency, but the Yankees have a plan to keep him on their roster.
Passan notes that Gerrit Cole, who recently returned to form after an elbow injury, is expected to consider opting out of the remaining four years and $144 million of his nine-year, $324 million deal. If he decides to opt-out, the Yankees can counter by extending the contract to a tenth year, adding $36 million to the total value.
According to the insider: “Back from an elbow injury and pitching well, Cole also figures into this winter’s free agency with a strong expectation that he will opt out of the final four years and $144 million of his nine-year, $324 million contract with the New York Yankees. But any fear that Cole will find greater riches elsewhere can be allayed simply: If he chooses to opt out, the Yankees can nullify it by adding a 10th year at $36 million onto his original deal.”
Gerrit Cole, who turns 34 on September 8, has missed part of the season due to a right elbow problem but has managed to put up solid numbers since returning to the mound. In 11 starts, he holds a 5-2 record with a 3.72 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and 62 strikeouts over 58 innings. While these stats are respectable, they don’t quite match the dominant performance that won him the AL Cy Young award last season.
Even without his peak performance this year, Gerrit Cole would likely draw substantial interest from multiple teams if he hits free agency. This presents a tough choice for the Yankees: risk losing the ace to another team or extend his contract by one more year, keeping him in New York until age 39 at a cost of $36 million.
The situation underscores the complexities involved in high-stakes contract negotiations between teams and star players like Gerrit Cole, where strategic decisions must balance immediate needs with long-term planning.
A Yankees’ crisis looms if Gerrit Cole opts out
The New York Yankees are bracing for a financially challenging offseason, as they face the potential departure of several star players to free agency. At the forefront of their concerns is 25-year-old outfielder Juan Soto, who could demand a contract on par with Shohei Ohtani. This comes as the Yankees are already committed to Aaron Judge’s nine-year, $360 million deal.
While the Yankees have a history of maintaining a high payroll, keeping Judge, Soto, and pitcher Gerrit Cole on the roster could push their financial commitments to unprecedented levels. The combined salaries of these three stars could result in a payroll that even the Yankees, known for their deep pockets, might find challenging to manage.
This situation makes the Yankees one of the most closely-watched teams heading into the offseason. Gerrit Cole’s potential opt-out decision adds another layer of complexity to their financial and roster strategies.
The Yankees’ front office will need to tread carefully, balancing their ambition to remain competitive with the realities of payroll management and luxury tax implications. Decisions about retaining or parting ways with these marquee players will have significant ramifications for the team’s future roster and financial flexibility.
Gerrit Cole’s 2024 season began with challenges, including injuries and performances below his usual standard. However, he has recently regained his dominant form, coinciding with the New York Yankees taking a two-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East. This resurgence is timely for Gerrit Cole, as it enhances his value ahead of his impending decision on whether to opt out of the remaining four years and $144 million on his contract.
The Yankees now face a complex decision regarding Gerrit Cole’s future. They must weigh the benefits of retaining a pitcher who will be 34 at the start of the 2025 season against the financial implications of paying him close to $40 million annually until he’s 38. While the Yankees have a history of substantial spending in pursuit of World Series titles, they may need to reconsider their priorities given other pressing free agency needs.
The substantial financial commitment required to keep Gerrit Cole may force the Yankees to carefully evaluate their options, especially in light of other areas that may require attention in the free-agent market.
With the offseason looming, analysts and fans will be watching closely to see how the Yankees navigate these high-stakes negotiations. The outcome will likely shape the team’s competitive and financial outlook for years to come.

Absolute Embarrassment
If he ops out let him go. $144 million for 4 years is enough. How good is he going to be at age 39 with his body breaking down now. We have to sign Soto. That’s more important.
