A video posted by the trainer of Gary Sanchez on Tuesday fed rumors about his possible return to the New York Yankees. The video showed the catcher working out, lifting weights, taking swings, and doing cage practice while he was wearing a Yankees shirt.

Not surprisingly, Gary Sanchez’s outfit quickly led Yankee fans to think that the controversial catcher could be coming back to New York.

Gary Sanchez had a lot of early success with the Yankees. His historic rookie season in 2016 led to an All-Star season in 2017. Game 4 of the 2017 American League Championship Series had a Gary Sanchez moment when the catcher scripted a go-ahead double.

But he had a hard time the next year, and even though Gary Sanchez briefly played like an All-Star in 2019, he only got worse. Sanchez was traded to the Twins in a deal that included Gio Urshela and fetched Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Josh Donaldson, and Ben Rortvedt. He had a terrible 2020 and 2021. Sanchez hit 16 home runs and had an OPS of .659 in 128 games for Minnesota.

Social media divided over Gary Sanchez’s return

Gary Sanchez is now a free agent, but he is still looking for a team. His choice of clothes during a workout had some Yankee fans dreading a possible return and others dreaming of it.

I mean if it’s an invite to spring training and cheap then why not? COMPLETELY different expectations and we know that if he doesn’t get pull happy he can be a good hitter. Not saying sign him as a starter but start Jose why not have a backup like Gary 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bring him home for little money

The lack of interest in Gay Sanchez so far is surprising, especially since he is a hitter with an OPS+ of 70 in the last three seasons. The Yankees love their projects for sure. Gary Sanchez would fit into the budget of the Yankees, who seem to be trying to avoid crossing the luxury tax threshold, which is $3 million away. But would they really want to put him on the team, especially since the left field is still empty? Most likely not.
