Sean Casey, a former three-time All-Star and one-time hitting coach for the New York Yankees, has chimed in on the Juan Soto trade rumors, emphasizing the Yankees’ need for a star left-handed bat. After the conclusion of the 2023 season, the Yankees found themselves at a crossroads, realizing the need for a bold offseason strategy to revamp their offensive performance and rekindle their winning spirit. While they acknowledge the significance of internal improvement, the front office is acutely aware that external reinforcements are imperative. In this context, the name of Juan Soto, the superstar outfielder from the San Diego Padres, has emerged as a potential game-changing solution.

Juan Soto, widely recognized as one of the premier outfielders in Major League Baseball, is on the cusp of entering the final year of his salary arbitration. Despite his consistent and prolific contributions to the MLB since his rookie season, there exists a belief that the San Diego Padres might not be inclined to secure his services with a long-term contract extension.

This speculation has triggered a wave of anticipation and discussion, particularly within the corridors of the New York Yankees. Many have begun to ponder the possibility of the Padres making Juan Soto available for trade, a notion that has garnered considerable attention. A prevailing sentiment is that Soto’s talents could shine brilliantly in the vibrant context of New York.

Sean Casey, among those advocating for such a move, offers a unique perspective. He has a firsthand understanding of New York’s offensive requirements and has expressed unwavering enthusiasm for the prospect of a Juan Soto deal. Casey goes as far as to describe it as a “grand slam” for the Yankees, emphasizing the transformative impact such a trade could have on the team’s lineup.

The tantalizing question emerges: What would a trade involving Juan Soto to the New York Yankees entail? The Bronx Bombers appear to possess a wealth of promising prospects that could entice the San Diego Padres into a potentially monumental trade. Notable names like Michael King, Jasson Dominguez, and Oswald Peraza have all been brought up as potential components in trade packages for the three-time All-Star.

The Soto Speculation

Juan Soto player of the San Diego Padres

Juan Soto, a left fielder extraordinaire, garnered attention for his impeccable performance while wearing the Padres’ colors in the 2023 season. As stated by The Athletic, the Padres are set to lower their payroll by a considerable $50 million in the coming year, Juan Soto, who is projected to earn $33 million in his final year of arbitration, may become an attractive trade candidate.

Insider reports suggest that, as of now, formal discussions between the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres regarding Soto’s potential availability have not occurred. However, this does not necessarily indicate a lack of interest or intention to explore such an option. There are several factors contributing to this apparent delay.

The Yankees are currently in the process of formulating their comprehensive offseason plan, which includes evaluating their payroll and resources, and the Padres are engaged in an active search for a new manager. These factors may explain the absence of official talks. Nevertheless, it’s clear that the Yankees have been monitoring the Padres’ situation, especially focusing on the incredible talents of Juan Soto, and the constraints of the Padres’ budget.

Soto’s allure

Juan Soto’s allure is undeniable. At the age of 25, he boasts a remarkable career OPS of .946 and an astonishing on-base percentage of .421 across his six seasons in the majors. In the previous season, he launched 35 home runs, even while confronting the challenges of playing half his games in a ballpark known for being less friendly to left-handed hitters.

What sets Soto apart is his ability to launch balls to the pull side with consistency, making him an enticing prospect for any team in need of additional power in their lineup. The idea of having Soto alongside Aaron Judge, one of the game’s premier power hitters, presents a tantalizing prospect for Yankees fans. Such a combination could potentially form the most formidable top of the lineup in the entire league.

Soto’s contract status is another factor that makes him an intriguing trade target. He is poised to hit free agency after the 2024 season, and with Scott Boras as his agent, it’s unlikely that he will agree to a contract extension before testing the open market. This creates a scenario where the Yankees could potentially acquire a player who is not only six years younger than Aaron Judge but also boasts similar levels of production.

This move could signal Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner’s willingness to spare no expense in pursuit of a World Series championship. However, the financial implications are considerable, as the combined salaries of Soto, Judge, and Gerrit Cole alone would exceed $100 million annually.

Soto’s contract status and the uncertainty surrounding a potential extension might work in the Yankees’ favor when it comes to the cost of acquisition. They might not have to part with as many valuable assets as the Padres did when they originally traded for Soto from the Washington Nationals.

A relevant comparison can be drawn with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ acquisition of Mookie Betts from the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox received outfielder Alex Verdugo and two top-15 Dodgers prospects, Jeter Downs and Connor Wong, in addition to salary relief by parting with David Price.

The ideal trade partner

The potential for a trade between the Padres and Yankees appears enticing for both parties. The Padres, heading into the 2024 season, are in need of starting pitching and more outfield support. The Yankees, on the other hand, boast significant organizational strength in their pitching depth.

Pitchers like Clarke Schmidt, Michael King, Randy Vásquez, Jhony Brito, Drew Thorpe, Will Warren, and Clayton Beeter all represent valuable trade assets. However, the Yankees would be wise to retain Chase Hampton, who impressed during his season in Double-A, emerging as their top pitching prospect over Drew Thorpe, who won the minor league pitcher of the year award in the previous season.

In the outfield department, the Yankees have options like Everson Pereira, who may be made available in a trade due to his struggles in limited playing time during the previous season, especially in replicating the power he demonstrated in Triple-A. Trading Spencer Jones or Jasson Domínguez might be considered costly, but no option should be entirely off the table when pursuing a proven superstar like Soto.

Competition

The Yankees may face stiff competition in the race for Soto’s services. The Baltimore Orioles, for instance, possess a wealth of young talent and, despite their reluctance to spend lavishly in the past, could be tempted by the prospect of having Soto for a season at roughly $30 million.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, if they miss out on Shohei Ohtani in free agency, have an abundance of young arms that could be part of an attractive trade package. The Seattle Mariners also have promising young starting pitchers who might catch the Padres’ attention. Teams like the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers, with their strong farm systems and potential financial resources, cannot be ruled out as potential trade partners.

The issue of timing is another critical factor in this equation. The Padres intend to contend in 2024, and trading Soto during the offseason may not align with their goal, especially considering the expected returns in a trade. Just a year ago, the Padres advanced to the National League Championship Series (NLCS), narrowly missing the postseason this year despite numerous extra-inning losses and one-run games. With their existing core, there is optimism that their fortunes could improve in the upcoming season with better luck.

A league source, familiar with the situation, suggested that if the Padres were to consider trading Soto, it might be more likely at the trade deadline when they have a clearer picture of their playoff prospects and the possibility of extending his contract.

While the specifics of what the Padres might seek in return remain shrouded in uncertainty, it is worth considering that, given the impending unrestricted free agency of stars, a pitching talent may become a coveted asset in any potential negotiations. The outcome of these deliberations will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the future landscape of both the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres.
