In a dramatic turn of events at Camden Yards, the New York Yankees squandered a late lead, losing to the Baltimore Orioles and relinquishing their brief hold on first place in the AL East as they head into the All-Star break.

Rookie Ben Rice had given the Yankees a two-run advantage in the top of the ninth with a three-run homer off Orioles closer Craig Kimbrel. However, the Yankees’ defense faltered in the bottom of the inning.

In a dramatic ninth-inning collapse, the New York Yankees suffered a crushing 6-5 defeat to the Baltimore Orioles. The game unraveled when Gold Glove shortstop Anthony Volpe mishandled a routine grounder with the bases loaded, allowing a run to score.

But the decisive moment came when Alex Verdugo misjudged a deep fly ball hit by Anthony Santander. Verdugo initially moved in, then stumbled trying to recover, allowing the ball to sail over his head for a game-winning two-run hit.

Outfielder Alex Verdugo admitted to misjudging a critical play, initially moving in on a hit before reversing course and stumbling, which allowed two Orioles to score and tie the game.

Following the game, Verdugo was visibly distraught, sitting at his locker for nearly 30 minutes before addressing the media. He took full responsibility for the loss, expressing his pride in his defensive skills and acknowledging that this crucial error was his fault.

Verdugo’s misplay turned what could have been a game-ending out into a walk-off victory for the Orioles, marking what many considered the Yankees’ most painful loss of the season.

The loss was especially bitter for All-Star closer Clay Holmes, who failed to protect the lead.

This defeat not only cost the Yankees the game but also their chance to sweep the series and claim the division lead. The Orioles celebrated on the field while the Yankees were left to contemplate their missed opportunity.

“I take a lot of pride out there defensively,” Verdugo said. “This one’s on me. was just trying to catch up ground that I gave away on the initial step. I was trying to do anything I can to get to it.”

Volpe’s costly error sinks Yankees

Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe ended the first half of the season on a disappointing note, with a pivotal error contributing to a 6-5 loss to the Orioles. Volpe, who has been in a prolonged slump, mishandled what he called a routine grounder in the ninth inning, allowing a run to score and extending the inning.

Volpe admitted he was still grappling with the mistake, attributing it to improper footwork and handling of the ball. He emphasized the routine nature of the play, expressing disbelief at his misstep.

Closer Clay Holmes defended both Volpe and outfielder Alex Verdugo, praising their defensive skills and competitive nature. Holmes highlighted Volpe’s Gold Glove credentials and Verdugo’s effort in left field, asserting that these errors were atypical of their usual performances.

“Two of our best defensive guys,” Holmes said. “Volpe’s won the Gold Glove. His range and the plays that he makes out there are incredible. Same with Doogie. He makes so much effort out there. I think any one of our pitchers who take him in left field over anybody.

“Those are two guys who never take plays off and they compete out there. Obviously, two tough plays but we all know that’s not them.”

However, the Yankees closer also acknowledged his own struggles during the game, having allowed two walks and a single before the defensive miscues. He admitted that his command was not up to par, exacerbating the situation.

Holmes’ recent performances have shown a decline from his earlier dominance this season. In his last 10 outings, he has given up 13 hits and 12 runs (eight earned) in just 9 ²/₃ innings.

This loss underscored the Yankees’ defensive vulnerabilities and pitching inconsistencies as they head into the All-Star break, raising concerns about their ability to maintain their competitive edge in the tight AL East race.

Not even close to a dominant closer yet Boone will continue to usr him in high leverage situations because he’s even eorse as a manager.
