BALTIMORE — The New York Yankees strengthened their postseason push Thursday night with a 7-0 shutout of the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. The win highlighted the impact of two trade deadline pickups, as Amed Rosario and Camilo Doval continue to prove their value during the final stretch of the season.

Rosario delivers clutch production in crucial moment

Amed Rosario wasted no time getting involved in Baltimore. The versatile infielder sparked the Yankees’ offense in the first inning with a two-run double that gave New York an early cushion.

With two outs and runners in scoring position, Rosario drilled a sharp line drive off Orioles starter Cade Povich. The hit brought in both runners and set the tone for the night.

Since arriving from Washington on July 26, Rosario has been steady for New York. The 29-year-old is batting .283 with a .321 on-base percentage and .441 slugging in 152 at-bats. He has five home runs and 19 RBIs in pinstripes, providing key production in a utility role.

That output marks an improvement from his stint with the Nationals, where he hit .270 with five homers and 18 RBIs in 46 games. His .299 average against left-handed pitching made him a natural fit for the Yankees’ roster needs.

Yankees bullpen strengthened by Doval addition

Camilo Doval did not pitch in Thursday’s lopsided win, but his presence in the bullpen remains significant. The former All-Star closer adds experience and firepower to a relief corps that has seen heavy turnover.

After a rough 2024 with a 4.88 ERA, Doval has rebounded this season. He owns a 3.82 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 66 strikeouts with 16 saves. Before being traded to New York on July 31, he posted a 3.09 ERA with 15 saves and 50 strikeouts across 46 2/3 innings in 47 games for San Francisco.

Armed with a fastball that reaches 104.5 mph and a biting slider, Doval is built for high-leverage spots. His transition to New York came with challenges, as he carried a 5.23 ERA and 1.94 WHIP in his first outings. But improvement has followed. On September 11, he collected his first Yankees save against the White Sox.

Doval also brings playoff credentials. In 2021, as a rookie with the Giants, he pitched 3.2 innings in the NLDS, recording his first postseason save in Game 3. He became the youngest Giant since 1969 to record a postseason save, working two perfect innings in a 1-0 win over the Dodgers.

Rosario’s career renaissance continues in pinstripes

Rosario’s journey has been marked by highs and lows across seven different organizations. Once a top prospect, he has become a dependable veteran with versatility and timely hitting.

Across nine big-league seasons, Rosario carries a .274 career average with 68 home runs, 385 RBIs, and 110 steals in 3,659 at-bats. His 1,001 hits show steady production.

Defensively, he has provided flexibility. This year with Washington, he started 20 games at third base and 13 at second. His ability to handle multiple spots has given the Yankees needed depth.

Rosario has also logged postseason experience. With Cleveland in 2022, he played in all seven playoff games, batting .241 with a homer and two RBIs. He reached base in every game, helping Cleveland advance past Tampa Bay before falling to New York in the ALDS.

Thursday’s two-run double reflected that knack for clutch moments. His calm at-bat against Povich demonstrated why the Yankees sought his services.

Doval brings championship pedigree to bullpen

At 28, Doval has already built a strong reputation as one of baseball’s most electric relievers. His career numbers include a 3.35 ERA, 106 saves, and 345 strikeouts over five seasons.

His best year came in 2023, when he earned an All-Star selection. That season, he tied for the National League lead with 39 saves while posting a 2.93 ERA.

His velocity separates him from most relievers. His four-seam fastball averages 98.6 mph, ranking among the fastest in baseball. His slider has been equally effective, limiting hitters to a .158 average in 2022. That year, 57 of his 80 strikeouts came via the slider.

In October, Doval has also delivered. His debut postseason run in 2021 included a two-inning save without a baserunner, making him the only rookie since 1969 to achieve such a feat. His 19.1 scoreless innings streak, with 25 strikeouts, highlighted his ability to rise under pressure.

Recent performance trends encouraging for both players

Both deadline additions are trending upward. Rosario has settled into a consistent rhythm with the Yankees, while his .299 average against lefties makes him ideal in platoon matchups.

Doval, after his rocky start in New York, has steadied. He has gone four consecutive appearances without giving up an earned run. His September 11 save provided a confidence boost for both him and the team.

Their progress aligns with the Yankees’ recent surge. Since August 23, New York has posted a 17-7 record, climbing to the top of the American League wild card standings.

Statistical impact on Yankees’ championship odds

The numbers show how Rosario and Doval have improved the roster. Rosario’s .816 OPS against left-handed pitching fills a key offensive need. Doval’s 106 career saves and playoff background give Boone flexibility in late innings alongside closer Devin Williams.

Together, their experience and proven track records raise the Yankees’ chances of moving deep into October.

Playoff implications continue mounting

Thursday’s win cut the Yankees’ division deficit to three games behind Toronto. Rosario’s early double set the tone offensively, while Doval’s presence in the bullpen adds confidence for tight games down the stretch.

Manager Aaron Boone now has more lineup and bullpen options. Rosario’s versatility provides insurance across the diamond, while Doval’s elite stuff gives New York another late-inning weapon.

Numbers tell story of strategic acquisitions

The statistical profiles of both players underline their value. Rosario’s .736 OPS with Washington was solid, but his .802 OPS in New York proves how well he has adjusted.

Doval’s bounce-back from a 4.88 ERA in 2024 to a 3.09 ERA with San Francisco this year showed his resilience. Despite early struggles in pinstripes, his strikeout rate remains strong, with 50 punchouts in 46 2/3 innings before the trade.

Career data supports their credentials. Rosario has been reliable over nine years, while Doval has dominated across five seasons with strikeout ability and velocity unmatched by most relievers.

Building momentum at perfect time

With the postseason approaching, the Yankees appear to be hitting their stride. Thursday’s win over Baltimore highlighted the impact of Rosario and Doval, two acquisitions built for October baseball.

Their quick adjustment into the clubhouse and consistent contributions on the field reflect the Yankees’ focus on experience and versatility. As the postseason nears, both players look poised to play central roles in the team’s championship push.
