After a Rain Delay, Josh Donaldson and the New York Yankees Finally Produced a Big Inning at the Plate

Donaldson hit his 1st home run for the Yankees since making the club, a two-run shot in the fifth inning that lifted New York to a 5-2 win well over Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night. The Yankees scored four runs in the fifth inning, immediately following a 49-minute rain delay that occurred with a man on first and one out.

Heavy rain, including hail, forced the teams off the field just as Orioles reliever Mike Baumann came into the game. When play continued with the Orioles leading 2-0, Travis Lakins (0-1) entered.

Anthony Rizzo singled home a run after Aaron Judge walked. Giancarlo Stanton followed with a game-tying double to left-center, but Rizzo was thrown out at home.

Donaldson, who was acquired by the Yankees in a trade with the Minnesota Twins before the season, but New York in front with a drive to right-center, a section of Camden Yards that was left untouched when the wall in left was decided to move back and raised.

The Orioles’ Cedric Mullins hit a two-run homer in the third inning. For New York, Jameson Taillon pitched 4 2/3 innings before being relieved by JP Sears (1-0), who worked out of a fifth-inning jam by retiring Ramón Uras on a flyout with the loaded bases.

In the sixth inning, the Orioles as well left the bases loaded.

Sears was appointed to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following the game.

In an 11-inning loss to Baltimore’s relievers on Friday night, the Yankees‘ bullpen shone, but it was New York’s bullpen that shone on Saturday. Sears was replaced by Michael King, who pitched two scoreless innings. Clay Holmes recorded four consecutive outs for his first career save.

Tyler Wells, the starter for Baltimore, allowed three hits in four scoreless innings.
