The New York Yankees have made a strategic adjustment to their lineup for tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, scheduled for 6:50 pm. Veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu will be absent from the field, with Oswaldo Cabrera stepping in at third base. This decision follows a challenging period for DJ LeMahieu, whose recent performance and health have raised concerns.
What happened with DJ LeMahieu
DJ LeMahieu was benched tonight as a precautionary measure. According to NJ.com, the reason was that he was hit by a pitch on his left pinky in his first plate appearance and later bounced a foul ball off his neck during his third at-bat in the late innings.
This shift comes after the Yankees’ 2-1 victory over the Rays on Wednesday at Tropicana Field. In that game, Trent Grisham’s two RBIs were enough to secure the win, bolstered by a strong performance from the Yankees’ bullpen, which has been a consistent strength this season. However, the victory was not without its dramatic moments.
DJ LeMahieu, batting ninth in the lineup, had a tough night, going 0-for-2 at the plate, with his only time on base coming when he was hit by a pitch. The evening worsened when LeMahieu fouled a ball that struck him in the throat, a rare and painful incident. The unsettling scene, reminiscent of historic extreme impacts, was difficult for fans to witness, especially in high definition.
DJ LeMahieu’s struggles at the plate have been a persistent issue this season. He is currently batting .202, with a team-low .525 OPS, a significant drop from his performance in previous seasons when he won batting titles in 2016 and 2020. His batting average has lingered below the Mendoza Line for much of the season. A recent surge where he went 5-for-10 over three games briefly raised his average from .175 to .206, providing a glimmer of hope amid a difficult campaign.
The Yankees are undoubtedly keen to see a return to form for a player who has been a pivotal part of their lineup in previous seasons.

Hey Amanda, incidents like a foul boul to the throat, are why guys get days off. In no uncertain terms is that a benching. Now, if you want to talk about how DJ is performing, that’s a different conversation.

“D.J. LEMAHIEU” AS AN EXCUSE FOR THE TEAMS HORRIBLE PERFORMANCE AS OF LATE !!!.
