New York — Derek Jeter returned to Yankee Stadium on Thursday, but not for a team-related event. It was not for his formal induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Jeter was there to promote his new business but went to speak about the Yankees’ summer slide.
Jeter opened up to Fox News Digital about the current rough patch the New York Yankees are going through down the stretch of the season in between discussions about sports cards and the new business venture. Jeter’s comments came during the latter part of the interview.
The New York Yankees’ lead in the American League East has shrunk to just five games with one game remaining in their series against the Minnesota Twins. “Captain Clutch” Jeter pointed out that many teams go through such bad phases. But the most important aspect is to watch how a team can bounce back from its decline.
“Every team goes through a rough patch; it’s very difficult to win; I think a lot of times people assume that’s easy but if it was easy, everyone would be doing it, Jeter told when asked to comment on the Yankees’ slump. He added, “Everyone goes through a rough patch, whether it’s on the field playing baseball or in business you’re gonna have bumps in the road along the way and that’s just a part of it but it’s how you bounce back from it.”
A storyline involving Aaron Judge emerges toward the end of the season as well. On Wednesday, he hit his 55th home run of the season and is looking to break the American League record held by Roger Maris, who hit 61 home runs throughout his career. Jeter expected Judge to break the AL East home-run record.
“I think he can do it,” Fox News Digital quoted Jeter saying and adding that he could not relate to what the pressure on him felt like because he was not a power hitter. “It’s hard enough to get a hit let alone a home run; the way he handled himself, especially here in New York, I think if anyone is capable of doing it it’s him,” the ex-captain added.
The 14-time All-Star visited New York as a businessman. He has collaborated with his business partner Brian Lee to officially introduce the Arena Club, a brand-new platform for collecting sports cards. This platform aspires to act as a “bridge” between the time-honored hobby of collecting sports cards and the emerging world of digital sports collectibles. In other words, the Arena Club is a platform for collecting sports cards.
Fondly called Mr. November by fans for his post-season performance, Jeter named the New York Mets, the cross-city rivals of the Yankees, among the favorites to make a run in the postseason. However, the Mets are facing a tough task in fending off a determined challenge by the World Series champion Braves.
In response to a question about whether or not there will be another Subway World Series shortly or right now, Derek Jeter laughed off the possibility. He nodded in affirmative but was unsure if it could happen soon.
“Wow, man, 2000? Before that, when was it?” Jeter asked with a laugh. “… There you are.
“It’s possible, but you never know.”
Do you think a Subway Series is possible between cross-town rivals? Do you agree with Derek Jeter’s view about the rough patch of the Yankees? How soon the Yankees can recover?
