On Friday, during Derek Jeter’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Yankee fans booed George Steinbrenner. To calm the fans, Jeter had an epic response “You better cheer.”
Steinbrenner walked to the player with a large check of $222,222.22 to donate to Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation. Fans began booing the Yankees’ owner as soon as his name was announced.
There were also jeers at Yankee Stadium when Derek Jeter thanked general manager Brian Cashman.
The HoF induction ceremony went well and fans gave an outstanding welcome to Jeter on his return to the stadium. However, they didn’t miss a chance to express their hostility to the Yankees’ top brass, who they consider responsible for the team’s recent slide.
Even the Yankees legend’s thanks for Steinbrenner and his family after the game was met with a divided audience reaction.
In response, Jeter looked around the stadium and then smiled.
“He told fans: “Let me tell you something. You better cheer, trust me, Jeter said to engage more of a positive reaction. The Bronx faithful then grew louder.”
Captain Clutch immediately thanked Cashman. Even the people in the crowd weren’t nice to the Yankees’ general manager.
There has been speculation over the fate of Cashman though president Randy Levine is positive about his stay with the Yankees.
Since the middle of July, any time a member of the Yankees‘ office has appeared in public, they have been greeted with jeers because the team is currently in the midst of an unprecedented losing streak.
In the first half of the season, the Yankees were called the best team in baseball. However, since the All-Star break, they have gone 19-27.
The slip has cut the Bombers’ lead in the AL East from 15.5 games to 4.5 games as they head into a crucial series this weekend against the Rays.
Do you agree with fans? Are Steinbrenner and Cashman responsible for the mess?
