On Tuesday, Yankees closer Clay Holmes tested his back injury by throwing off a mound, and he reported feeling spasms.
The 29-year-old right-handed pitcher, who has 17 saves and an ERA of 2.39 but has been struggling lately, said that the plan right now is to rest and get treatment. He didn’t say for sure that he would go on the injured list, but he seemed sure that would be the next step.
Holmes hasn’t pitched since Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox, despite his 51 strikeouts and 1.02 WHIP this season.
Even without Holmes, the Yankees‘ bullpen has been effective recently. Albert Abreu tossed two scoreless frames while striking out one batter on 28 pitches in Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
However, New York’s offensive struggles have been the main issue. Against Tampa Bay, the Yankees managed only four hits and scored just one run for the third consecutive game they lost.
In the last seven of their games, the Yankees have not scored more than three runs in any of those games.
