The New York Yankees are currently navigating a season defined by inconsistency, reflected in their 39-39 record since June 1. Despite showing glimpses of potential, the team has struggled to maintain momentum, raising questions about the decisions of General Manager Brian Cashman.

Yankees lead World Series odds

As previously mentioned, the Yankees currently lead the odds as the top contender to win the World Series. As of this publication, the Yankees hold a 15.4% chance, slightly ahead of the Dodgers, who have shined with Ohtani and stand at 14.9%.

Fan sentiment toward Brian Cashman has varied throughout the season, often mirroring the team’s performance. A lackluster June and July, during which the Yankees played below .500, has further eroded confidence in his leadership.

Critics have increasingly pointed to Brian Cashman as a key factor in the team’s fading World Series aspirations.

August offered a promising start, with the Yankees sweeping the Phillies, who then held the best record in MLB, in a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. The team faced a favorable schedule, with eight of their next nine series against opponents with losing records. Manager Aaron Boone emphasized the importance of finishing the month strong, a goal that seemed within reach at the time.

The month began with a series win against the Toronto Blue Jays, but the momentum quickly stalled. A series loss to the Angels at Yankee Stadium marked the beginning of a turbulent stretch. While victories over the Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox provided temporary relief, the 12 runs allowed in the opener against Chicago hinted at deeper issues. A walk-off loss to the Detroit Tigers further compounded the team’s struggles, only slightly mitigated by subsequent series wins against the Cleveland Guardians and Colorado Rockies. However, back-to-back series losses to the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals, highlighted by a season-high 21 hits and 14 runs conceded in the series finale against St. Louis, have left the team in a precarious position.

Offensively, the Yankees have been inconsistent throughout August. They scored three or fewer runs in nine of 26 games, contrasting sharply with six games where they managed eight or more runs. Players like Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton have shown flashes of consistency, but the lineup still has significant weaknesses. The decision to continue using Alex Verdugo as the everyday left fielder, despite his struggles, has been particularly perplexing, especially with top prospect Jasson Domínguez performing well in Triple-A. Depth issues became more pronounced when Jazz Chisholm Jr. missed time, exposing vulnerabilities as DJ LeMahieu’s performance declined.

The pitching staff has mirrored these struggles. For every strong performance by Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, or Marcus Stroman, there has been an equally troubling outing. The bullpen has been adequate but falls short of the elite standard seen in previous Yankees seasons.

As the Yankees face ongoing challenges, the focus inevitably turns to the front office’s decisions at the Trade Deadline. While the acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. was a positive, the failure to reinforce the pitching staff, unlike other playoff contenders who secured key arms such as Jack Flaherty and Tanner Scott, has raised concerns. The additions of relievers Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel de los Santos have produced mixed results.

With the Yankees holding the best record in the American League at 79-58, but narrowly maintaining a half-game lead, the effectiveness of Brian Cashman’s management is under scrutiny. Whether his approach has been successful is a question that may require a nuanced answer, though for now, a simple assessment may suffice.

“The additions of relievers Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel de los Santos have produced mixed results.” Yes, and those mixed results are terrible and horrific!!

It is my opinion that Cashman’s time here is up. He needs to go somewhere else and start over again. Hey, AA got the boot from Toronto, spent sometime with the Dodgers, and has re-risen Atlanta, and kept it humming. He just doesn’t construct solid enough of a ML team in the off season, counts too much on his little cheap finds, and the development of the farm system IMO is total garbage.
