The Cardinals Beat The Yankees 12-9 to Complete a Three-Game Sweep

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees 12-9 on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep. Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong both homered and drove in four runs.

DJ LeMahieu homered for the Yankees, who have now lost five in a row. It’s their longest losing streak since a seven-game slump in September of last year.

New York still has the best record in the American League, but its lead in the AL East has shrunk to 9 1/2 games over Toronto, the smallest margin since June 15.

This year, St. Louis became the first team to sweep the Yankees in a three-game series. So far, Atlanta and the New York Mets are the only teams in the majors to avoid that fate.

The Yankees’ Aaron Judge drove in four runs, bringing his AL-leading total to 97.

In his Yankees debut, Frankie Montas struggled. The right-hander was acquired from Oakland on Monday and pitched three innings, allowing six earned runs and five hits. He struck out two batters while walking three.

In the fifth inning, plate umpire Ed Hickox ejected New York manager Aaron Boone for arguing balls and strikes. It was Boone’s 23rd ejection and his sixth of the season. Matt Blake, the pitching coach, was also fired.

With a two-run single in the second, Judge put his team up 4-1. In the bottom half, St. Louis scored five runs. St. Louis led 6-4 after Arenado hit his 22nd home run.

The Yankees’ Aaron Hicks had three hits and reached base four times.

Chris Stratton (6-4) earned the victory after allowing two runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out four batters and did not walk one.

Ryan Helsley recorded his 11th save in 14 attempts. Albert Abreu (2-1) suffered the defeat.
