NEW YORK — In Friday night’s game, newcomer Masataka Yoshida made a significant impact just four batters into the match by smashing a three-run home run and contributing to a total of four runs. Additionally, Brayan Bello showcased an impressive performance on the mound, pitching for six innings. As a result, the Boston Red Sox secured an 8-3 triumph over the struggling New York Yankees, who now find themselves with a record of two games below the .500 mark.
Justin Turner kicked off his game by singling in his initial three trips to the plate, notching two crucial RBI singles in the process. The momentum continued as Alex Verdugo joined in with an RBI single, igniting Boston’s productive three-run second inning, which was spurred by a fielding error committed by New York’s second baseman, Gleyber Torres.
In the eighth inning, Aaron Judge delivered a powerful blow with a two-run home run against Garrett Whitlock. Despite this effort, the Yankees faced their sixth consecutive loss, marking their most extended losing streak since a seven-game slide from September 4th to 10th, 2021. Notably, this late in the season, New York found themselves falling two games below a .500 record, a situation they hadn’t experienced since they held a 57-59 record after an 11-6 victory over the Angels on August 31st, 1995.
Just 19 pitches into the game against rookie Jhony Brito (4-6), the Red Sox surged ahead with a 4-0 lead. Masataka Yoshida played a significant role in this advancement, sending a changeup into the right-center field seats for a home run. This home run by Yoshida came after the Yankees had back-to-back mound visits due to a need to discuss signs, as the PitchCom device malfunctioned for both teams.
Boston initiated the game with an impressive sequence of four consecutive hits. Prior to Yoshida’s 13th home run, Turner contributed an RBI single following the successful plate appearances of Verdugo and Rafael Devers.
Yoshida’s 13th homer extended the Red Sox’s lead to 7-0, while also marking the third instance in his career where he drove in four runs. Devers further enhanced the score with a run-producing base hit in the ninth inning.
Bello (8-7) secured the victory by conceding just one run and six hits, marking his third win in four recent starts. This achievement was further highlighted by his second triumph against the Yankees this season, achieved through nine groundouts, including two double plays.
Bello encountered his sole challenge in the fourth inning, as the Yankees managed to place runners on first and third after consecutive hits by Torres and Billy McKinney. However, on the very next pitch, Bello efficiently retired Harrison Bader with a soft grounder.
Following the concession of Judge’s 23rd home run, Whitlock rebounded by striking out Giancarlo Stanton, sealing the end of the eighth inning. In the ninth, Brennan Bernardino encountered two hits at the outset, and Chris Martin then wrapped up Boston’s sixth victory in seven encounters against the Yankees.
The Yankees managed to prevent a three-game shutout streak for the first time since September 2016. This occurred when Anthony Volpe doubled and subsequently scored on DJ LeMahieu‘s groundout in the third inning.
Brito’s performance saw him yield seven runs (with six being earned) and concede nine hits over 2 1/3 innings.
