New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone reiterated his stance on keeping Aaron Judge in the third spot in the lineup, despite Judge’s recent struggles at the plate. Judge himself expressed optimism about turning things around in May, saying, “It’s May. It’s a new month. Time to get going.”
After the 2-7 loss, Aaron Judge was caught reflecting on the series against the Baltimore Orioles, in which neither he nor the Yankees found much success. Aaron Judge went 1-for-13 with four strikeouts, mirroring the team’s one win out of four games. This underperformance contributed to the Yankees slipping to second place in the standings. Judge acknowledged his batting average of .197 and emphasized the importance of staying focused despite the challenges, stating, “If I was batting 1.000, that’d probably be the only time I’d be feeling good.”
Boone acknowledged Aaron Judge’s efforts to improve, noting his recent streak of better performances. However, he also recognized the need for Judge to capitalize on hitting opportunities and make adjustments, particularly against fastballs and breaking balls, saying, “It’s just swinging at the right pitches, understanding when there’s times when they’re gonna pitch around you and not give you much and take your walks when you can.”
Can Aaron Judge and Juan Soto play at a good level in the Yankees’ lineup?
Last weekend, Aaron Judge showcased his immense impact with two commanding victories over the Brewers, clinching wins by a whopping 15-run margin. Adding to his recent achievements, Judge surpassed Derek Jeter’s homerun record, cementing his place among the Yankees’ top 9 all-time homerun hitters, achieved within just seven days.
Despite recent challenges, there was a big expectation that he would form a great duo with Juan Soto. The Dominican joined the Yankees through a trade in the offseason following a successful two-year tenure with the San Diego Padres. In 2023, he boasted impressive stats, hitting .275 with 35 home runs, 109 RBIs, and an impressive OPS of .930, earning him a spot in MLB’s top ten rankings, according to ESPN.
Soto, known for his durability, played a full 162-game season in the previous year. In 2024, he continues to deliver solid performance, batting .331 with eight home runs, 25 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.029. With his consistent output, Soto is expected to complement Aaron Judge’s prowess on the field.
Despite battling a lingering toe injury since the summer of 2023, Aaron Judge remains a stalwart presence in the lineup. While his batting average sits at .197, he has managed to hit six home runs, tallying 18 RBIs and boasting a respectable OPS of .725 in the current season.
Despite suggestions of a lineup change involving Juan Soto and Judge, Boone remained noncommittal, indicating a willingness to explore options but emphasizing Judge’s potential impact once he finds his rhythm, stating, “Somebody’s going to pay, big time. He’ll get it going, and look out when he does.”
Looking ahead, the Yankees aim to rebound from their series loss to the Orioles and capitalize on upcoming matchups, including against the Detroit Tigers. Both Judge and Soto, integral to the team’s success, seek to bounce back and contribute significantly.
Soto, acquired in the offseason, brings a track record of solid performance and durability to the team. His ability to produce consistently is expected to complement Aaron Judge’s contributions once he adjusts to his new surroundings.
The Yankees, determined to redeem themselves after missing the playoffs in 2023, currently hold a respectable record but recognize the need to address offensive shortcomings. Judge remains optimistic about the team’s prospects, stressing the importance of staying focused and executing at the plate, saying, “It’s baseball. I’ve had stretches like these plenty in the major leagues, plenty throughout my life. It’s part of it. I can’t sit here and dwell on it.”
Boone remains confident in the team’s ability to overcome challenges and improve collectively. As they continue to navigate the season, the Yankees aim to capitalize on opportunities and maintain momentum heading into the crucial month of May.
