New York Yankees’ infielder Anthony Volpe demonstrated significant improvement in his hitting abilities during Opening Day, drawing praise from manager Aaron Boone. Volpe’s performance was crucial in the Yankees’ 5-4 victory against the Houston Astros, where he reached base four out of five times, including three walks.

Yankees’ Anthony Volpe shows hitting improvement

Boone expressed satisfaction with Anthony Volpe’s progress, stating, “I think his at-bats have been consistent.” This marked the first time in Volpe’s career that he drew three walks in a single game, with two proving instrumental in driving runs for the team.

Anthony Volpe’s offseason dedication to refining his swing paid off, evident in his disciplined plate approach on Opening Day. Boone emphasized Volpe’s resilience and timing at bat, showcasing his growth as a hitter.

“I think this version of him hopefully continues to move the needle to where he’s controlling the strike zone at a better rate too,” Boone said. “I think his at-bats [this spring] have been really consistent.”

In addition to Anthony Volpe’s standout performance, the Yankees acquired veteran utility player Jon Berti through a recent trade. While Berti did not feature in the Opening Day lineup, Boone highlighted the importance of allowing him time to acclimate to the team dynamics.

Building on Anthony Volpe’s impressive Opening Day performance [as reported by Pinstripes.com], the Yankees also gained another key contributor in Jon Berti. Berti, excited to be with the team, is expected to play a significant role in filling the gap left by DJ LeMahieu’s absence. Aaron Boone praised Berti’s versatility, calling him a “front-line super-utility player.”

As the Yankees finalized their roster for the season, pitchers Nick Burdi and Clayton Beeter secured spots in the bullpen, while Jahmai Jones earned a place on the bench. The team made adjustments to accommodate Burdi on the 40-man roster by placing Gerrit Cole on the 60-day injured list.

Despite Cole’s injury setback, the Yankees remain optimistic about their prospects for the season. With Volpe’s improved hitting and the addition of Berti, the team aims for success as they progress through the season.

Getting Berti, and including John Cruz in the package to get him… really Cruz & Rortvedt for him? Really does make me think that Peraza may not show up on any active roster anytime soon, maybe not at all in 2024.
