According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Yankees are looking to move Joey Gallo and have received interest from the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays.
Gallo is hitting .159 with a .282 on-base percentage and hit 12 homer in 82 games for the Yankees this season.
The 28-year-old was signed by Yankees from the Texas Rangers in a July trade last season, but before becoming a free agent this season, he now appears to be on his way out.
Gallo did hit 13 home runs in 58 games with the Yankees last year, but his batting average of .160 left a lot to be desired. After struggling in 2022, even he admitted his flaws.
New York signed outfielder Andrew Benintendi to fill Gallo’s place in the squad.
Despite Gallo’s struggles with Yankees, he has some value in the league. With the Rangers, he earned 2 All-Star selections and 2 Gold Glove Awards while his average home run is 39 in 162 games. In 2017-18, he hit minimum 40 home runs in past 2 seasons.
The Rays and Padres, who are currently positioning 22nd and 25th, could benefit greatly from this production.
The Brewers have quality power hitters in Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez and others, but with Andrew McCutchen and Christian Yelich rotating at designated hitter, they could use more outfield depth.
For any of these playoff contenders, Gallo could be a good buy-low option.
