New York Yankees 1, Oakland Athletics 4
The powerful New York Yankees didn’t get a hit until the fifth inning, which was pitched by Adrián Martnez. The Oakland Athletics shut down the Yankees for the second straight game with a 4-1 win over them on Sunday.
The recently anemic lineup only got one hit in 11 innings against Adam Oller and the Oakland bullpen the night before. Against another starter who came into the game with an ERA above 6, New York wasn’t much better.
Martinez, who was called up from Triple-A before the game, gave up two walks and no other baserunners until Aaron Hicks’ single with two outs in the fifth inning. This was New York’s second hit in 18 innings against the last-place A’s.
Martinez only gave up three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Kyle Higashioka’s RBI single in the fifth was the only run he gave up.
Oakland’s bullpen kept New York from getting any more hits, and A.J. Puk got three outs for his fourth save.
Aaron Judge, a big hitter for the Yankees, has hit 49 home runs so far. He is trying to become the 10th player in the history of the major leagues to hit at least 50 home runs in more than one season. Judge went 0 for 4 and struck out three times.
When Clarke Schmidt (5-3) made his second start of the season, the A’s got on him early. Stephen Vogt tied the game with a two-run home run in the 10th, and then scored on Dermis Garcia’s single in the first inning.
In the third, Tony Kemp and Garcia each hit a single that drove in a run to make it 4-0.
With Houston’s win over Baltimore, the A’s were officially out of the race for the AL West. This is the earliest time that Oakland has ever lost the chance to win the division.
