Are the Yankees willing to do a pitching trade with the Phillies?

With Gerrit Cole out of commission following UCL surgery, the New York Yankees find themselves scrambling for rotation reinforcements. Though Cole’s procedure incorporated internal bracing, which typically shortens recovery compared to standard Tommy John surgery, he’s not expected back before the 2026 All-Star break.

Despite this glaring rotation gap, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has maintained a surprisingly measured stance. His strategy appears to be patience rather than immediate action.

“We’ll just evaluate what’s available, and this time of year, very little is available,” Cashman stated Tuesday, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “Normally, the more significant opportunities don’t exist until the trade deadline.”

Reading between the lines: The Yankees are screwed up, but Cashman is not ready to make moves – at least for now.

Other teams, aware of the Yankees’ troubles, are either refusing trade or asking for too steep prices. However, there are available options and it depends on Cashman to make the first move.

Ranger Suarez: A practical trade target

While the Yankees have been connected to premier arms like Dylan Cease of the San Diego Padres and Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins, landing a front-line starter would demand substantial prospect capital – resources the Yankees might be reluctant to part with currently.

A more attainable yet effective alternative could be Philadelphia Phillies southpaw Ranger Suarez.

Jared Frank from SB Nation’s The Good Phight recently suggested the Phillies might consider moving Suarez, despite his consistent production in their rotation.

“You know how good he is, how much of a comfort it is to know that you have someone like him in the rotation,” Frank wrote. “And you know that the Yankees would love to have that comfort. They might be willing to pay a good price to bring Suárez’s assistance to an ailing rotation. And with Suárez’s contract expiring and Andrew Painter on the way, the time might be right.”

Phillies’ motivation for a potential deal

Though Suarez has been valuable to Philadelphia’s success, the Phillies have bolstered their rotation considerably. With the addition of Jesus Luzardo alongside established starters Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, the Phillies could afford to part with Suarez, particularly as top prospects Andrew Painter and Mick Abel approach major league readiness.

Furthermore, Suarez enters free agency after this season, giving Philadelphia an incentive to extract value now rather than potentially losing him without compensation next winter.

Suarez would integrate naturally into the Yankees’ rotation needs. As a crafty, control-oriented lefty, he excels at preventing solid contact – essentially representing a more polished version of former Yankees fan-favorite Nestor Cortes, whose performance declined toward the end of 2024.

During the 2024 campaign, Suarez maintained a 3.46 ERA across 27 starts, establishing himself as a dependable middle-rotation option. Perhaps more importantly, he’s demonstrated postseason reliability. In eight playoff appearances, he’s struck out 35 batters over 32 innings while posting an impressive 1.69 ERA—suggesting he could thrive under the intense scrutiny of Yankee Stadium.

While not a direct replacement for Cole, Suarez would provide stability as a number two or three starter in a Yankees rotation currently lacking both depth and consistency.

Financial compatibility

Suarez’s $8.8 million salary presents another advantage for the Yankees. With Cole’s injury insurance covering approximately $13.5 million, acquiring Suarez would preserve financial flexibility for additional moves if necessary.

Framework for a potential exchange

The Phillies’ needs in the outfield and bullpen make the Yankees naturally compatible trading partners. A plausible transaction might look like this:

Proposed trade package

Yankees Receive:

  • LHP Ranger Suarez

Phillies Receive:

  • OF Trent Grisham (providing defensive versatility and outfield depth)
  • LHP Brent Headrick (a young, controllable relief option)

This exchange would address both teams’ needs effectively. The Phillies would acquire Grisham, a defensively skilled outfielder, while Headrick would strengthen their bullpen depth. Meanwhile, the Yankees would bolster their rotation without sacrificing premium prospects.

Critical decision point for Yankees front office

The Yankees cannot reasonably delay until the July trade deadline to address their rotation deficiencies. While elite starters like Cease and Alcantara may remain out of reach, adding Ranger Suarez represents a pragmatic, cost-effective move to reinforce their starting staff.

If Cashman genuinely believes this roster can contend for a championship, he must act proactively rather than simply “waiting and evaluating.” While Suarez may not generate headline-grabbing excitement, he could provide exactly the stabilizing presence the Yankees need to remain competitive until Cole’s eventual return—whenever that ultimately occurs.
