The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) announced Thursday that Anthony Volpe is the recipient of the Yankees‘ 2024 Heart and Hustle Award. This prestigious award is given annually to a current player who not only excels on the field but also best embodies the values, spirit, and traditions of baseball.
Heart & Hustle Award
The Heart & Hustle Award, established in 2005, is the only award in Major League Baseball voted on exclusively by former players. Nominations are gathered from team alumni, and the winner is selected through a letter ballot by MLBPAA members. This award recognizes a player’s passion for the game, dedication, and overall excellence both on and off the field.
Anthony Volpe’s performance this season
Anthony Volpe‘s performance this season has been noteworthy. In 109 games, he has hit nine home runs, recorded 39 RBIs, and accumulated 116 hits. His on-base plus slugging (OPS) stands at .694, with a batting average of .255. These statistics reflect his consistent contributions to the Yankees and his embodiment of the award’s criteria.
The Heart and Hustle Award is unique in its selection process. Prior to the All-Star break, committees of former players from each team choose one player from their respective rosters as an honoree. At the end of the season, both current and former players vote on an overall winner, who will be announced in November.
