Three Yankees players have been named finalists for this year’s Gold Glove awards. Anthony Volpe, Alex Verdugo, and Juan Soto all received recognition for their defensive performances this season.
Anthony Volpe, who won the award last year, is again in contention at shortstop. Despite a slight dip in his Defensive Runs Saved (DRS), from +15 to +6, he remains one of the league’s top defenders. His +13 Outs Above Average (OAA) by Statcast shows his ability to make difficult plays.
Alex Verdugo also earned his second consecutive nomination after a solid year in left field. He posted a +6 DRS, though his OAA was more average. Facing stiff competition from Steven Kwan and Colton Cowser, Verdugo’s aggressive play has not gone unnoticed. But this adds a layer of irony, as left field had been a lingering dilemma for the Yankees leading up to the postseason.
Juan Soto’s surprise nomination
Juan Soto’s inclusion as a finalist has raised some eyebrows. Known more for his offense, Soto finished the season with a -4 OAA, making his nomination unexpected. His defensive shortcomings have drawn criticism, but his high profile in the game keeps him in the spotlight.
The Yankees are currently focused on their ALCS series against the Guardians. With a 1-0 lead after Game 1, the team’s priority is winning a championship. These Gold Glove nominations are an added bonus, but the Yankees’ sights are set on the bigger prize.

Soto, to me was a joke. Having the others besides Meyers in CF, and not Judge are a joke, just by games started out there. Judge proved again last night that he can get everything you need a CF to get to. Meyers needs to win the CF GG.
