New York Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo will be back in the lineup for Game 2 of the American League Championship Series tonight after confirming his availability in a Tuesday morning call with manager Aaron Boone. Rizzo, who returned to action in Game 1 following a three-week absence due to fractured fingers, told Boone he felt ready to go after playing a key role in the Yankees’ 5-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians.
Anthony Rizzo ready for Game 2
Boone, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, admitted he was surprised by how sharp Anthony Rizzo looked in his return. “I didn’t expect his at-bats to be that good,” Boone said, praising the veteran for going 1-for-3 with a single and a walk in his first game since September. Rizzo’s ability to step back into the postseason spotlight and contribute immediately gave the Yankees a much-needed boost.
The 35-year-old’s inclusion in the Game 1 lineup had been uncertain until the last minute, with Boone initially hesitant to push him too hard after such a lengthy layoff. Anthony Rizzo had missed the entire AL Division Series against the Kansas City Royals, and there were doubts about whether his hand had healed sufficiently to play. But Rizzo convinced the coaching staff he could manage the pain and still perform at a high level.
“He understands how valuable these games are, and he doesn’t want to take any moment for granted,” Boone said, noting Anthony Rizzo’s determination to help the team in their quest for a World Series berth. Boone pulled Rizzo from Game 1 in the ninth inning as a precaution, but the first baseman has shown no signs of lingering issues.
As Anthony Rizzo takes the field again tonight, the Yankees will rely on his leadership and presence in the lineup as they aim to build on their momentum and secure a 2-0 lead in the series. With the stakes rising and Rizzo’s experience shining through, the Bronx Bombers are looking to strengthen their path toward the World Series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
